What if the airline just goes bankrupt?
If they are paying for food and hotels, potentially for several days, with all the flights grounded, it's got to finish some of them off.

Presumably they have insurance that even covers liability arising as a result of force majeure events? I wonder?

Cityboy's post above is worth taking into consideration as well, if they live in London they may not get far claiming for a hotel...

Problem is that they all want to be together. So if they won't be reimbursed for a hotel, they are all likely to want to hang out at me. My son and 5 sweaty teenagers.....I don't think I'm going to take too kindly to that.;)

I was sat on a Ryanair flight on the apron at yesterday morning when this all kicked off, we'd even had the safety demonstration.
The pilot kept us all updated about what was happening and after an hour the flight had to be cancelled and we returned to the terminal. We were advised on the aircraft how to re-book.

I have since re-booked my flight and the return on the internet for free by following their instructions.

I'm very happy with the way I was treated, it was not in any way their fault
and there is nothing more that they or any other airline could have done could have done and when you think I paid only about a fiver!

This is the first Ryanair cancellation I have ever had in hundreds of flights with them and I look forward to flying with them next week (ash cloud permitting).

Even if they would be reimbursed for a hotel they would probably have to be staying in one as near to the airport as practically possible, so not very handy for hanging out in London...

Believe me, if they weren't legally obliged to get you rebooked for free I'm fairly sure they wouldn't do it! ;)

These people who scream RIP OFF should be grateful they arnt stuck trying to get home.Im ina hotel in LA and just been chatting to a couple who were due to fly back yesterday to Heathrow....BA have told them it will be at least a week before they can re book on a flight outof LA.They have suggested that they get a flight from from LA to San Fransico book into a hotel there and the might get a flight home the early part of next week...The flight to SF and hotels have to be paid for by the couple and neither BA or their Insurance will pick up the costs...Estimated costs nearly a £1000.....

As an EC carrier presumably flying into the EC, BA is obliged to sort out hotel accommodation in LA for them until they can rebook them onto a flight. There is no way out of this.

If they are still there, show them this if you can: http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=CELEX:32004R0261:EN:HTML

A group of friends were going to Spain saturday to Wednesday. Commitments mean that they won't go if there is a real risk that their return could be delayed. Now the thoughts are to have a few days in London instead, so at least the group get together, even if not abroad.

So they are thinking that if the flight is cancelled ryanair should provide them with "care" until they can be rebooked. Obviously at some point it becomes pointless going. So the question is if the flight is cancelled on saturday they could try and rebook for sun or mon and still travel. But what happens if they can't get a new booking until Tuesday or even wednesday, are ryanair be obliged to "care" for them until the time of the new flight. and does it make a difference if they then decide not to travel, or go there and back in a day?

All poor students so pennies count.
Ryanair would be obliged to care of them as far as I can see but if they then didn't travel after this care I don't think it would be looked on at all kindly and could be viewed as misrepresentation. If they went there and back in a day I don't think anyone could argue...

Cityboy's post above is worth taking into consideration as well, if they live in London they may not get far claiming for a hotel...

A group discussion on whether they wanted to go, if they could get a rescheduled flight, given the risk of not getting back on time and the fact that there is an opportunity to cancel NOW which could disappear if the ryanair decide that they are able to fly - has resulted in them deciding to cancel. Managed to claim a refund for the outgoing (cancelled) and the inbound (still available) flight from ryanair easily on the website.

    Thanks for all the advice.
