Anyone got any advice re my (admittedly very silly) dilemma?

Personally, it all depends if you can do it bigger and better. I know that's not what weddings are all about but if you have less money, less time and less imagination than your friend I wouldn't do it.

My husband for our wedding wanted a purple theme. I went to a close friend's purple wedding the year before and I said I'm really sorry, but she had it all perfect, and unless I had a bigger budget I couldn't out do it and it would be a poor imitation!

A vintage wedding sounds gorgeous though!

    When is your wedding?

    July 2012 xx

Maybe substitute lanterns? Or chinese paper lanterns? I saw a really cool pic of a wedding where they had flower balls as decorations - think they would be quite easy to do yourself if you could get artificial flowers.

I'm not sure if it would really fit the vintage theme, but thanks for the idea. :) OH likes the idea of setting off Chinese lanterns at the end of the night, but apparently a lot of venues forbid this, as it's a fire risk!

I just had a really good giggle at 'purple wedding' lol!!! I kept imagining a wedding full of Violet Beauregards.

I probably have as much money, time and more imagination than her. But I genuinely don't want to compete. I don't actually want our weddings to be *the same* and they won't be - ours will be more handmade and vintage looking, and we will be having other little touches as well. Our venues are very different too, so that should help. :)

I just wasn't sure if we could incorporate things that she had (birdcages, brooches etc) without her getting annoyed. Sounds ridiculous I know - and they are pretty common in wedding mags/blogs, but you know how people get about these things lol.

 For a start my friend with the purple wedding had enough to make sure all her purple bits matched! You should have seen our red theme... burgundy, orange reds etc!

You know what brides are like over their own weddings, yes she'll probably be annoyed but that doesn't make it rational so you don't have to consider her feelings in what you want to do for your wedding day!

Don't know if you've seen this but it was my favourite inspiration blog... http://www.stylemepretty.com/

I think if you want the brooches/ birdcages, etc, you could probably still have them, does she know that you were already planning on having these touches?
  • I think you'll be fine if you have similar aspects so long as you don't use them all in exactly the same way. You also have plenty of time to cone up with additional ideas to detract from the similar things.

Plus if she notices and says anything to anyone at the wedding it will come across as really bratty- like she's jealous. Any other cross over guests prob won't remember most of it was used at her wedding anyway. I imagine everyon will be looking around going oh that us so cute and that is so like Mr and Mrs Wanchai to even associate it with anyone else!

Oooh, love that blog!!!! Thanks :)

Maybe she will get annoyed, but I did mention that I wanted vintage style decor, birdcages etc to other friends when we got engaged and before her wedding, so hopefully it will be ok.

I didn't mention it to her as she was so busy planning her own, but she knows me well and knows that I am a vintage-loving kind of gal! :) Perhaps I am worrying over nothing...

I don't think she will make a big thing of it, at least on the day. We will keep it as different as we can anyway and add some extra touches so that there is 'overlap' but we're not copying her!

Re crossover guests - there will only be about a dozen (her and her OH and our mutual friends) out of about 100, so that's not too bad!

OK, I feel a bit better now. I just didn't want anyone going 'Oh look at wanchai having birdcages when her friend had them too'! I mean, they are pretty common at weddings these days!!!! :D

  • I think you'll be fine wanchai - as you say, the vintage, tea-party style is very popular. I reckon as long as you use different colours and don't style things exactly the same (for instance, if she put flowers in her birdcages, think of a different way to use yours), then it won't look samey!

btw, thank you for that link; I now know exactly how I'm doing my table plan! :T Just need to source a load of picture frames now.....
