go to the motoring section and get a quote for insurance. you have to have worked in the public sector or had a family member who has in the past though.
it's cheapest for cars that are at least 10yrs old and of group 1.
quote for an 18yr old man with a 1995 fiat panda came out at about £1400. i had to put the excess at £500 to get the quote this low.
this is the extreme, but still good for other cars.0 -
I just tried it fully comp for my 19 year old daughter and its come out nearly £300 cheaper than it was for third party with other companies!!thanks soo much!!
just an update.i went through unison and got it even cheaper!!!"You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf"

Just had my renewel in from nationwide, they were looking £700 for my car insurance, done some pricing around and the cheapest I could get it was £640.
Until I tried Quinn Direct, they quoted me £500 for a years insurance.
One thing to note with them it didn't seem to make much difference what postcode I used, with all the other insurers I get penalised for living in BT35 (usually to teh sum of £200) but quinn direct did not charge extra for this postcode.0 -
Hi All,
To give a quick history, the postoffice offer a £50 cashback on their car insurance.
Their T&C's on their website (http://www.postoffice.co.uk/portal/po/jump1?catId=19300223&mediaId=19300227) state "A £50 Postal Order will be sent within 28 days of the start of your policy."
It was noted on the MSE site, I think by Martin, that this insurance was worth a look because of the cashback making it cheaper.
I did this, and with the cashback I saved £18 pounds.
However the cashback hasn't arrived, I have spoken with BISL Ltd, who administer this insurance for the PO, and Daniella the lady I spoke to was less than helpful, in fact more or less told me they would pay me when they were good and ready!
Brenda a manager at the PO was also not interested, advised I would post on here.
This means, if you took the policy, paid by CC and relied on the promised cashback to help settle the payment, your up a creek that sounds like 'hit' without a means of manual propulsion.
Anyone else had a similar experience?
My humble advice: AVOID THIS CAR INSURANCE LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!!!!!
Let others know that the PO as always, simply can't deliver.
For the figures withholding the payments nets the PO £2.5M and presumably they get interest?
Go on Martin, shame the little lying puppies.

I found the PO to have lowest quotes if you deducted the £50, my quote was £416 then with the £50 cashback off £366. I phoned Open & Direct, told them about the PO, they then quoted £339, went to Abbey then, they quoted £329, went back to Open&Direct and eventually got it for £297 with £100 excess.
My renewal premium with Autoline was £432 so the calls were worthwhile, saving me £135.0 -
I'm shocked when i see the price some are paying on here:eek: im 38 been driving 18 years never had an accident & my price this year for a 1 year old Punto with £100 excess was £265 fully comp, thats with no alarm & on road parking0

im with Quinn direct. I was still on my "R"'s when i switched and paid £470. My previous year was £1351 with Elephant.co.uk. That was a 23 year old driving a Suzuki Jimny jeep with 1 years no claims. Quinn dont include some things like windscreen cover so you may need to take that out seperately.Undefeated Wii Fit ski jump champion!

Thanks for the car insurance tip Martin,
I used confused.com after getting quotes from my own broker of £276 and £315 and thinking, 'I'm a year older so's the car, and with no claims, yet my insurance doe'snt go down'.
I ve got my insurance through the post office (with norwich union) for £217.57 with a £50 CASHBACK in the post, making it £167.57, a saving of £109.
The quote from my broker (for £276) was ALSO with norwich union.:T0 -
 Now:eek: I see the above posts about the P.O not sending out the cashback. Ooops, I'll not hold my breath then.
Still saved me £59 without it. But I WANT IT!!!!!:mad:0 -
I can hardly believe it - I've found an insurance company who listen to me and got me a good deal.
I went with Open + Direct and saved £100 on what my renewal would have been with Hughes (Axa had quoted me £150 MORE than my renewal).
For the first time, the guy who dealt with my quote actually paid attention to what I do for a living and explained it to the different companies when getting the quote, rather than just using the blanket term 'journalist' and leaving it at that.
I'm not a reporter and don't use my car for work but usually insurance brokers/companies don't care and I either get stung or they don't want to know me.
With my six years' no-claims bonus I got my 1999 Astra insured fully comp for £280 (with a company called Prestige) and only £100 excess, the same terms as my existing policy.
I had almost been hoping that Open + Direct wouldn't be able to better my existing quote by at least £25 as they had promised to send me a cheque for £25 for wasting my time in that case. I got that offer through the post because I had asked them for a quote last year and they were keen to get my business this time round.
So anyone in the media might want to give them a try, especially if you aren't out and about in the line of work.0
