I'd been getting quotes from Abbey, Quinns etc for about £380 for my astra, discovered Quotezone.co.uk which is a site that submits your details to lots of brokers, and they came back with a quote of £282 thru a company "budget insurance services". I've checked the coverage and it's pretty similar to abbey (excess, protected ncb etc) but quite a bit cheaper.

Worth a try for all in N'orn Iron :)

Quotezone is listed in the first post of this thread, just incase anyone needs the weblink for it ;)

I've just renewed my car insurance for this year. My previous insurer (privilege) now no longer covers NI. Last year they were still unbeatable so I kept them on. This year was a different story. Quote for this year, fully comp was £522. Some people might say that's not bad, but this was a massive hike for me compared to last years prices. I've never made a claim on my insurance, so decided to look round. Allianz direct (link to website on first post ) came up trumps with a quote for £366, quite a difference. I've also put my partner and my Dad on the insurance without any extra costs. Next best to this was Elephant (link on first post) at £376 and third was Diamond (link on first post) at £396. Just goes to show that it pays to shop around!

Update on last year. My car insurance renewal has just come in at...............
    £320.63 :j:money: (still with Allianz)
I still have my partner and my Dad listed as named drivers on my policy. Policy also covers driving another car, windscreen replacement, courtesy car etc. Well chuffed as the other quotes I checked were asking £500+

Anyone else had any bargains on car insurance this year?

hello, just a few tips i've found about car insurance.
Following year AXA insurance, got 4 years no claims discount as wass insured on parents car for 3 years although had to provide proof of this, which was hard to get.

That was a pretty good move - how did you manage to get that? Did they ask, or did you tell them?

I've been driving on my Dad's insurance for 7 yrs now, but only had my own for 3. Wondering if I could bump up my no claims because of this

I've been with Diamond for the last three years. (Before that I was with Admiral but then got the cheaper quote from Diamond. Admiral own Diamond... )

Anyway, I recently picked up a leaflet in the post office, checked the online quote - £150 cheaper and there was a £50 cashback! Unfortunately my insurance isn't up for a few months, but I'll be going back to the post office to check it out again.

I've worked on computer systems for insurance companies for the past 10 years but, never having driven a car, I've never had any need to try them out as a consumer. A move to a village in Northern Ireland (there doesn't seem to be a tube nearby!!) has finally pushed me to get a provisional licence. I've just been looking for a new policy for my wife with me as a learner driver. We're both 38 (what an age to start driving!!), have a 2000 Polo, she has 9 years no claims and we're in the Newcastle, County Down area.

My wife was with AXA Direct and received a renewal quote from them for the address we just moved from (South Belfast). This was for £325 with a £250 excess. I went onto their website and got a quote for exactly the same details for £260 (that's what you get for loyalty!). I then changed address to our new place and there was no change of premium. I tried adding myself as a provisional licence holder but they wouldn't quote on-line.

After looking around I found the best other quote was from Quinn Direct at around £260 again (interestingly they were around £330 for the Belfast address). They let me have a quote for myself on a provisional licence at around £390 (going down to £310 when I have my full licence).

After looking at some of the previous comments on this board I got an on-line quote from the Post Office (for Norwich Union) at £316 for my wife alone but there is a £50 cash-back which makes it quite competitive. The best part though was that when I added myself on a provision licence the quote went down to £309, which I went with because I can't really see beating that. I also got a quote on a brand new bottom-end Mazda 3 as we're looking at changing the car soon and this still came out as only £335.

My personal tips from this experience are :

    1. Don't assume that your current insurer gives you their best price on their renewal invite (they profit from our complacency).

    2. An insurer who is the most competitive under one circumstance may cease to be competitive with even a relatively small change in risk.

    3. If it's likely that you'll change circumstances during the policy term get a quote for the proposed changes up front and factor that into the final decision if two quotes are otherwise close (often easier and cheaper not to change insurers mid-term).

    4. In Northern Ireland there may be not be the same range of insurers as elsewhere in the UK but it definitely pays to do the extra work to get the best deal.

Board, we are at that point in our lives where our son is now wanting to drive and pass his test asap...but insurance on both our cars was a non runner.

Therefore we have to think of buying a small cheap car with equally cheap insurance.......any help or suggestions/recommendations welcomed!

Yes, I realise it needs to be a small engined car, but which insurance companies deal with the younger driver etc, give a more realistic/affordable quote ?
