It's a big fat IPhone without the phone part - useful as a brick? It certainly takes the word 'portable' back to the 1980's. I'm sure it will sell well to the kind of folk that like to buy 'Apple' - that is those that like to pay for Linux......0

"For starters, the iPad starts at $499 (£329)."
Bit disingenuous there Marty. It may cost that in the Arkansas but it's bound to be significantly more in the UK. The cheapest price I've seen rumoured is £389 for the entry level model. Some people are even claiming it will be £499 although, personally, I think that's unlikely. It's my problem, it's my problem

I'm thinking they could still improve the iPad a bit
It could do with an optional stand to clip on to, for people who don't want to use it flat on their desk, so as to free up the hand that would need to hold it.
It would need a bit of weight so it didn't fall over.
It could also be folding, so as to protect the screen when not in use, and obviate the need for a separate hard case.
Then, for it's likely size, I wouldn't be surprised if someone clever decided to offer a version with a keyboard to facilitate entering text.0 -

Can't think why I am reminded of the classic "Dilbert gives Pointy-Headed Boss an Etch-A-Sketch" cartoon...0

BillScarab - your comparison to picking up a book - indeed, and depending on the size of the book then it's likely to be lighter and easier to hold and read than the iPad. But the iPad is much easier to carry around than the 20 shelves of books that it can store. I think it's more likely to appeal to magazine/newspaper readers than book readers, with links, videos and pictures, not really of interest to people reading 1,000 page stories who want to use their imagination.
I'd have to guess that £400 will be the starting price, which would get you a decent laptop, never mind netbook. You're definately paying for portability.
And multitasking. iPad will get 'third party multitasking' (there wasn't such a phrase until Apple decided to be restrictive!) in Autumn when it gets OS4 after the iPhone.0 -
I had a play on an iPad at one of my customers yesterday and was pretty under-awed.
The on-screen soft keypad takes up 2/3 of the screen in landscape leaving a 2" viewing strip above it.
It would be ok with a physical keyboard attached to it I suppose but then wouldn't that just be a laptop in two pieces?"A nation of plenty so concerned with gain" - Isley Brothers - Harvest for the World0 -
IT DOES NOT MULTITASK....IE i can't check my emails WHILE checking facebook....
That made me chuckle a lot.
Who does that haha? At the exact same time?
