Are you on any benefits? Were you or your husband or immediate family (mother father etc) in the armed forces? Check http://www.turn2us.org.uk to see if there are any charties who may be able to help.

Whatever you do don't go to anyone like provident, or payday loan companies. It will do more harm than good.

Woody, Can I direct you back up to the bit at the top under 'Etiquette'

"30 seconds of normal thought" not in your forte either then?

We all make mistakes, Lemon is in a predicament that none of us would wish to be but could easily be in at any time, unexpected bills and irregular employment.

At lease my fluff up was due to frustration not so much ignorance!

Didnt want to read and run so have a couple of suggestions:

First - did you take advantage of the deal for £5 free for milk etc from the milkman?

I did and got bacon and other stuff all free delivered, sounds like you have enough stuff for a few days anyway and if you could add to it with bread and milk etc from the £5 off you would stretch it much further. The other thing to bear in mind is that I spent a little over the £5 which will be debited from my bank account in over two weeks time. So you could place an order with them for more than the £5 knowing it will be paid by direct debit when you have been paid.

Secondly - my dad is a pastor at a methodist church and if a family in his parish go to him (dont need to attend church) and explain then he will usually pull a food hamper together and deliver it to them same day ( I know cos he raids my cupboards regularly - apparently my cupboards are better stocked than Asda!! - and open 24 hours )
I would guess the same goes for most churches.
And finally I know that if any of my friends called and said that their card had been declined in Asda and they had no food in and no cash for a bit then they wouldnt need to ask I would always take some food round for them.

Good luck (and please post your general area - someone may have a more specific solution based on where you live ) :)

I've got basic stuff like flour, spices, oil etc it's fresh stuff that I'm short of. I've got 6 chicken thighs and a packet of fishfingers, some potatoes an iceberg lettuce, a butternut squash, frozen peas, 2 tinned sardines, 6 oranges, 3 pints of milk, onions, garlic, smallblock of cheese, 6 yoghurts and about 8 easter eggs, spaghetti and rice, tinned toms x2, beans x2 and 3 tins of chick peas. Also have a bag of yellow spilt peas, 1/2 loaf of bread, 6 hot cross buns and a bottle of champagne (oh the irony!).

have thought that if I can get to Sat that will be fine as my mum gets back late on Fri night - could do with some help meal planning so that it will last.

I don't know if this will help, but have you got any spices? If so, you could use 1/2 the chicken thighs, with 2 tins of chickpeas, garlic, onion for a curry.

Tin tomatoes, onion, garlic, for pasta, served with grated cheese ,and chopped lettuce.

Tinned sardines, on a bed of rice mixed with frozen peas, served with chopped lettuce.

Butternut squash, onions, 1/2 tin tomatoes to make stew, recipe here. If you've got any ketchup, use a couple tablespoons to add flavour, make up for the lack of tomatoes.

There was a recipe on here, which I can't find, which layered onions, and potatoes, with a cheese sauce for a meal. So use a pint of milk with remaining cheese.

    Beans on Toast.

Split peas, rest of chicken thighs, onions, garlic, 1/2 tin tomatoes for soup.

Fishfingers, peas, and oven potato wedges.

    Good luck!

Recipe suggestions here, I would try and stretch some of the meals to do 2 evenings if possible depending on how many kids you have and how old.

Chicken casserole using chicken thighs, onions, and tin tomatoes (could bulk out with tin of chickpeas or potaotoes), whatever herbs you have- serve with lots of rice

Veggie curry using butternut squash, chickpeas, potatoes, and peas, curry powder or chili powder - serve with more rice

Spaghetti with home made tomato sauce made with tin tomatoes, onion, garlic, any dried herbs with grated cheese

Fishfingers, peas/beans, mash (or however you like your potatoes)

Pea soup made with yellow split peas, serve with bread. (more of a lunch one maybe)

Hopefully you can use your £4.50 to buy some cheap breakfast/lunch options eg value bread, marge, breakfast cereal and sandwich fillings. Cheapest fruit and veg usually from local market. If all else fails beans on toast/jacket potato with beans is always a cheap andfairly nutritious meal

The big supermarkets aren't the cheapest by a long way. Don't know where you live but there are discount shops that sell end of line products from major retailers. You have to be selective but there are huge savings.

Sorry I didn't get back online last night - we had a power cut so I just went to bed. Thankfully electricity restored at about 5am this morning.

Thanks for the help. To clarify, we're on a DMP so have no access to any credit of any sort. Things had started to look up and hey at least all the essentials are paid for as everything leaves our account by DD on the 1st - so utility bills, DMP payment, mortgage, insurances etc all go. But things have gotten very tight with my OH not in regular work so we have less money coming in. We did have a couple of hundred in a savings account but the car and house insurance were both due in same month so I used it to pay for that.

The problem is that I am having to use the child benefit as the grocery money and that doesn't come until next Tuesday. I only have a £50 overdraft and had 50 in the bank so was planning to use that £100 for groceries for a fortnight or so and then hopefully my OH job will inish and he'll be paid. Stupid me though had forgotten that the council tax starts again in April so that has wiped out my £100 and taken me slightly over the overdraft limit which is why my card has been refused.

I've gone through the cupboards now and there's not a great deal. I have about £4.50 in change - probably a bit more if I look through the penny jar.

I've got basic stuff like flour, spices, oil etc it's fresh stuff that I'm short of. I've got 6 chicken thighs and a packet of fishfingers, some potatoes an iceberg lettuce, a butternut squash, frozen peas, 2 tinned sardines, 6 oranges, 3 pints of milk, onions, garlic, smallblock of cheese, 6 yoghurts and about 8 easter eggs, spaghetti and rice, tinned toms x2, beans x2 and 3 tins of chick peas. have thought that if I can get to Sat that will be fine as my mum gets back late on Fri night - could do with some help meal planning so that it will last. My OH has no money either but as he's working away his board and digs are all paid for so he shouldn't need anything.

    Hi Lemon,
that's so awful, I was in that situation a few years ago when I was a student,
last week I made a chicken mulligatawny soup using the ingredients in bold above, and adapting this recipe:
    http://www.101cookbooks.com/archives/coconut-red-lentil-soup-recipe.html

Once the lentils/split peas were done, I added an equal amount of rice to the pulses, and leftover roast chicken - just a handful, but you notice it's there.
It made an enormous VAT of soup, we're still eating it now, so far we've had it 4 times, and I froze half of it......
Suggest you try something similar, or some sort of curry :)
