Old tights I cut the legs around in 1" strips and use for plant ties in the garden Any more ideas for tights?

Cut up into small strips they work well as stuffing for cushions. These can be washed though they take a long time to dry naturally. Sheake them periodically to stop the filling clustering in one place. I still have cushion pads I made 30yrs ago.

Buy onions by the sackful (asian outlets are much cheaper ) Store them tied up in the leg of the tights with a knot between each to seperate them. They keep for ages

Priceless comment from previous poster about using the childs rolling pin. I love MSE, theres some cracking stuff in here, much of which I already do.

I started squishing toilet rolls when I joined up.

rather than waste some really crap morissons 42p hair conditioner, I watered it down and used as fabric conditioner, also used bubble bath in the washing machine ( sure mr calgon has something to say on that ;))

Ive used the trays from veg & meat as starter trays for seeds, yog pots etc

diute stardrops in a spray, do the whole house with it.

and so much more I cant remember
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

I did this for a while, running the washer and dishwasher during the cheap period. I eventually checked and have been told that the electric during the night only supplies the heating and hot water circuits which are seperate from the lights and power.
I dont want to spoil your efforts as I think this economy drive is the greatest, but it may be costing you money if you do things because you think it's cheaper. Hope I was misinformed.
    Good Luck

    This can't be right, surely.

If you look on your meter, you should find that you have 2 readings. If you wait until you are in the Economy 7 time zone, watch how fast it is going round, but on the lights/washing machine etc and see if it speeds up or if the other dial starts going round too - that should settle it once and for all.

Also, if I remember rightly, your E7 works on GMT and doesn't alter for BST so if you use timers to work washing machines etc then don't forget to alter them accordingly.

Before we moved we were on economy 7 and the electric company told me that if you ran a fridge and a freezer overnight then you should break even (not sure this was strictly true) but I did all my washing overnight with the machine on a timer.
Not on economy 7 now as my oven is electric and I reckon that the slightly more expensive daytime rate when on E7 outweighed any savings made by washing overnight.

............. and I reckon that the slightly more expensive daytime rate when on E7 outweighed any savings made by washing overnight.

Someone on another thread worked it out at 22% at EBICO prices and dependent on area, and I find it easily reached if you about early.
  • I do most of the things which have been listed.

I don't do vacuum cleaner bag, tumble dryer and face wipe things as I don't have them. Also don't do sandwich bag thing as I get enough packaging for sandwich bags anyway without trying. Also our cooker belongs to the landlord and is going rusty so no point in trying to make it wear evenly.

Now I'll have to try and think of something no one else would do...

...I use stones in the washing machine to save on washing liquid.

Soda crystals cut down on washing liquid, keep whites bright AND keep pipes clean! Must stop watching the ads.

That's what they used to do in the olden days. My grandmother told me that they were not disposable, merely old terry cloths. Also, like nuns in a nunnery, the 3 women in her household were usually all menstruating at the same time and she said that the back yard had a line full of these things at certain times!
Nanna said they used to 'wash those things' when the men wre out of the way.

BTW if you store onions in your tights remove the tights first;)

I try and save if I get bought some chocolates by putting them on a high shelf in my kitchen, I have some that I have to climb, literally, to get to. It doesn't work.

On days out with the kids, for snacks I take plastic cups and divide one bag of crisps between the three children, same if they have sweets. A plastic cup with a handle is also useful for feeding a toddler on the move if you aren't of the bag-of-quavers-and-a-happy-meal brigade;)

When you get a hole in one leg of a pair of tights cut the holey leg off a couple of inches down from where it joins the body. Then when you've got two, one legged tights wear them together to make a pair, you may need to turn one inside out to get a right and left leg. Of cause this only works if the two legs are the same colour!! Otherwise you'll look pretty silly. Old tights make good shoe polishers or dusters.
  • All this 'tights' talk has brought to mind a memory from the dim and distant past of a doormat my mum made from them years ago. She made a long plait from them, and coiled it into a rectangle shape, sewing it together as she went. I was also the only one I knew who had a 'patchwork bedroom', after she papered it with samples from old wallpaper books, which the DIY shops willingly gave away for nothing. I was fairly embarrassed by it at the time, but think of it as quite funky looking back at it now.
Eek! Someone's stolen my signature!
