thanks for the great tips....it seems I am not alone in some of my saving ways.
I keep the boxes from strawberries/raspberries to use as drawer dividers but I also recycle presents people have given me by giving them to other people - please tell me I am not the only one who does this? The gift is nice but you know its just not something I need or want.0 -

I think most people do this, and if they don't, they should - it just makes sense.
Unless you forget who gave you what...:rotfl:0 -
Oh its fab to find out it's not only me who does all this stuff... I save all the soap bits I get in hotels when I travel, grate, add soda crystals and turn into laundry gloop ....0

maryb wrote:Most obseesive money saving habit - when i make a batch of bol sauce I use two tins of tomatoes. I don't use the chopped ones because they are more exoensive but I zap the whole tomatoes in the food processor first. then I pour a little bit of water into one empty tin and swish it around to rinse it then pour it into the second tin and swish that around then finally pour it into the food processor bowl and rinse that. By the time I add it to the pan it is quite tomatoey so I feel I am getting the last bit of goodness out of the tin.
OK perhaps you can be too frugal
I would have thought that the electricity costs would balance out the extra cost of chopped tomatoes - value range ones are dirt cheap anyway!7 Angel Bears for LovingHands Autumn Challenge. 10 KYSTGYSES. 3 and 3/4 (ran out of wool) small blanket/large square, 2 premie blankets, 2 Angel Claire Bodywarmers0 -

I was subtle, well subtle ish and didn't stand there shovelling them in my bag or anything and no one noticed. Sis said it was a bad as stealing but as we bought stuff in there its not.......is it? :undecided
Anyhoo they lasted ages and hubbie felt spoilt on his birthday when I took him breakfast in bed and he had proper hotel style individual pots of jam and butter.
OK farrrrrr too excited about free pots of jam!!(when the men with white coats come for me I'll go quietly I promise)!
I too have 'appropriated' those little pots of jam from my June trip to a posh hotel in Amsterdam. I put them into my big plastic box of 'freebies ' that will travel with me next Saturday to our family holiday in the caravan at Caistor.
'Grannies box' contains sugar, salt 'n' pepper, mayo, tomato ketchup, vinegar and every condiment that is removable from various eateries over the past twelve months. also free samples of coffee. My daughter and huusband and five kids and myself use these when we are caravanning as it saves a lot of extra packing of odds and ends when we go on our hols.I also save the free 'freshen up towels' for the children in the car.
My late Ma -in-law was very good at recycling and always saved the cereal bag liners from breakfast cereals and reused them as greaseproof paper for lining cakes tins or as a drainer when she cooked chips .She also used looseleaf tea and the liners in the box were also reusued for this purpose. She had two little boys to bring up before W.W.2. on a widows pension and 8/- a week family allowance so she knew how to streeeetch her money. Even when she was an old lady she never lost the habit of making do and mend even though she didn't need to do it any more.
Myself, I always cut off the buttons from old garments, and have a huge collection in my button box that all of my grandchildren have played with on rainy afternoons when they were 'bored'. I also save the plugs off old electical items .I recycled the lead off an old lawnmower as there was about ten yards of three strand cable .I try not to waste anything .Old habits die hard .0 -

I use turkey instead of chicken, and dice it up, no one knows the difference in my house. I use a hair dye kit a few times just using a plastic spoon and plastic bowl. I use the ratio of the ingredients in my own formula.Penny xxx
