Not quite along the same vein but still as useful - if needing a new fence, check through skips for pallets - you need to remove some of the panels but we did this and are still using the fence 4 years later at the bottom of the garden. Also - great if you have an open fire and aren't in a smokeless zone, they burn a treat - and- watch out for tree cutting in your district - they will often agree to let you have any logs `cos they have to get rid of somehow. We have `nuff for next winter in our logpile what with the very (very) old shed too.
*laughing* uuumm the fence at the bottom of our garden was constructed from old pallets 21 years ago and still looks ok :)

Old tights I cut the legs around in 1" strips and use for plant ties in the garden Any more ideas for tights?

Cut up into small strips they work well as stuffing for cushions. These can be washed though they take a long time to dry naturally. Sheake them periodically to stop the filling clustering in one place. I still have cushion pads I made 30yrs ago.

When I put a new loo roll on the holder, I flatten it so that it's not perfectly round. It then doesn't tend to run away from you so much, so the kids use less of it!!!!;)

I've just started doing this too it definetely works!

A keen gardener i know uses old tights to store onions in. He has them hanging in his shed with both legs stuffed with onions. Looks really funny:rotfl:

I use tights to hold a marrow as in 'marrow rum'.

I suspect it smells better now - Magic Trees are horrible! Refragancing them is better than replacing them, because you can choose the fragrance oil you want.
When I was young, I assumed that ours was the only household where hoover bags were reused, but that absolutely everyone turned bottles and jars upside down to extract the last of the contents.
I put cooked pasta into the "empty" sauce jar and give it a stir around, then empty into the pot to get as much as possible of the sauce out without diluting it.
I also reuse sandwich bags as sanitary disposal bags.
  • My mother used to wash bags and reuse them but I cannot be bothered. To save throwing away the more expensive thick freezer bags I put food into the thin bags first-get them on a roll from Poundland or markets, hundreds on a roll. Then knot the thin bag securely and place into a proper freezer bag with a label(made from cereal packet naturally) and then use a bag tie or elastic band.
All I have to do then is take out the frozen pack and remove the clean freezer bag and then I can reuse it later. Costs hardly anything and I don't have to keep buying thicker freezer bags.
  • I would agree that recycling human waste is perhaps going a bit too far - I think that sewage farms dry and burn it and sell the ash to farms for compost anyway.
