Given the neighbours treatment of their pets, i think a call to RSPCA is in order.

    OK, time to post again.

The little shelter I made for her is still on the back yard but she hasn't been back for 2 days....until a couple of hours ago that is. I saw the owner yesterday and asked where she was. The reply I got was "I don't know. Probably off killing birds or something!" She was outside the door when I got up this morning. She let herself in and pretty much demanded some food so I gave her some whiskas which was gone in a couple of minutes. She then sauntered into the living room and parked herself on OH's computer chair and attempted to have a wash. It's funny watching them try to wash that bit under their chins isn't it? :-)

I tried to cut a couple of the mats out but whenever I touched her, she just wanted fuss and wouldn't sit still so I had to give that up. I can't risk cutting her. Her back isn't really matted, although she's still filthy, but her tummy is terrible, plus a couple of lumps which feel like dreadlocks around her neck. Am I right in thinking that if we don't do something about this then they'll get bigger? I've never had dealings with a long haired cat but I know they need regular grooming. I figured this was the reason why.

After stroking her today, her skin feels kind of cold, and there's no meat on her ribs. I know she's a hunter because she caught a blackbird on my garage roof, ate some parts of it and the puppy used the rest as a toy.

Right, I don't know anyone who could take her in because I don't know anyone from this area.

I'm terrified about talking to the neighbours as there always seems to be loads of lads around. These are the same lads that can be seen leaving her house at 7 in the morning carrying cans of beer.

Wharfevalleycp, I will be sending you a private message shortly.

I guess I'm not getting anywhere, but that's only because I'm spineless. I know how to deal with animals, oomins I'm not so good with!!
Yaaay, I finally conned a man into making a honest woman of me. Even more shocking is that I can put the words "Happily" and "Married" into the same sentence and not have life insurance on my mind when I say it ;-)

    Even newer update.

Thanks to you all, I have had a chat with the neighbour. There's stuff happening that even I didn't know about, so here goes. Let's just say that CP and RSPCA are no longer needed because, whether OH likes it or not, we have a new cat!!!

It appears, apart from the puppy hurting her, the eldest son and the neighbours partner are both allergic to cats! The youngest son adores the cat, which I already knew as he often comes outside to play with her, so what I have suggested is that I help look after her when the cat wants it and would you believe she gave me a cuddle and thanked me for my help. OMG, I'm stunned. She said she knew I liked her and was hoping I'd say something. She loves the cat but she didn't know what to do when her partner moved in and not knowing me, she thought it would be strange if she knocked on my door and asked me to take over.

She's already been spayed so no risk of kittens. When I speak to her again I will ask about worming and flea treatment but now my biggest problem is OH. My argument will be that I take care of the dog so the cat still won't be his responsibility. I'd best go, he's back!

    OMG, I've got a cat :-)

Well done on helping this poor cat. I think your best bet with the oh is just to say she has moved in, theres not much you can do about it, once a cat adopts you thats is, she wont go even if you oh tries to refuse to accept her :rotfl:

He's agreed, providing I hoover more often :-)

In my defence, both of our hoovers are rubbish so I will be investing in a new one specifically for pet hairs.

Now, advice needed on how to get rid of her matting!! Just going to go to shop and buy her some more food!!

lol - that sounds like the kind of answer i get when i want something....

well done you - glad it turned out ok - Ive been reading this thread, but not felt able to comment on it till now - I wouldnt have been any help at all !!

You can get a thing called a matt splitter, which is a guarded blade that you put in the matt and cut through - but to be honest,if they are that bad and you are worried about hurting her, it might be worth you having the vets do it - they can sedate her and clip them all off - its nicer for her, and you (though I have no idea how much it would cost!!)

good luck with your new family member !!

Ahh what a lovely person you are!

To get rid of the matting a trip to the vet will be in order - they will go over the matted bits with their trimmer. Using scissors yourself is very difficult and could result in your accidentally cutting lumps of skin off. If she has a shave then it'll all be definitley gone and you'll be starting with a clean slate, so to speak. When you're at the vet you could have her microchipped as well, and maybe have them bung a worm tablet and some flea treatment on her.

There are quite a number of grooming accessories on the market. I have two long haired kitties and they both love their furminator. They also have a rubber Zoom Groom and practically pass out with pleasure when I produce it. I got both of these from a big warehouse style pet shop. I keep meaning to get another Zoom Groom - one for each hand (seriously).

Also I have a Miele Cat and Dog vacuum cleaner. It's good - has an excellent attachment for getting cat hairs off furniture, and has an attachment for getting hairs out of carpet. The only thing wrong with it than I can see is the lazy lump who owns it and doesn't use it often enough.

Kitty (Gizmo is her name) is currently laid on the rug in front of the fire merely inches away from the dog. Both look very cosy and happy and even OH keeps looking at me grinning!

She's not even a year old so our little family is going to be around for a while yet! Yay!

Thanks everyone. Have requested the title of the thread be changed and I will post photos as soon as possible (When I find my memory card reader)

We're all very happy. Thank you ALL for your support and advice, I couldn't have done it without you!! :-)

With love from Screamer, Mr Screamer, Xebi and Gizmo! xx xx
