  • I've never paid a charge for doing a balance transfer so I don't know what happens in this case, but, how do you pay off the fee for doing the transfer? I'm guessing that when you make your minimum payment it goes towards the interest free transfer first and therefore you end up paying interest (as for purchases) on the fee?
  • The fee will be included in your first minimum repayment, I think.

    Therefore, your first minimum payment will be £40 (£35 plus £5 minimum).

    Subsequent minimum payments will be £5 for the duration of the 0% period.

    From the terms and conditions:

    ...you must pay:

    2.25% of the balance shown on your statement (as long as this is at least £5);
    OR
    the charges for PPC plus interest charged on the statement and fees, plus £5;
    OR
    the balance of the statement if this is less than £5;

    whichever is least.

    So you pay £5 or £40 in the first month after a balance transfer depending on whether a fee is charged or not. This will rise to £5 or £55 soon.

    I made a small purchase (£1.29) back on 25/09/2004, and my MP3 player arrived today! :)

    It's a 64MB one, but I haven't had a chance to use it yet.

    Mine arrived a few minutes ago too!
  • I've received my card and am going to make a small purchase today. The balance transfer I did on the application form didn't happen but when I phoned MBNA sorted it out immediately and haven't mentioned any charges. In fact, the operator I spoke to went through with me what I would be charged and when and I'm almost sure I'm not being charged for the Balance Transfer.

    I'll let you know about my CD player.

    Mine arrived this morning too :D:D

    64Mb & unbadged & the manual is useless, but I've recorded some tracks on it and am really pleased with it 8)

    It was worth the wait IMO.

    Thanks to Martin's Love Child for a wicked freebie ;D

    NOOOOOOOOOOOO!

    Don't EVER make a purchase on a 0% transfer card or you've messed up your 0% forever.

    Any payment you make will go against the 0% and NOT against the purchase - so you'll be paying interest on that purchase forever at their standard rate.

    You DO NOT need to make a purchase to get the free gifts on a new MBNA card - the balance transfer IS the transaction required.

    There is absolutely no harm in making a small purchase using an mbna 0% card or other as long as you pay it off first!!!! Ideally that same day or very soon after....

    eg....
    • £10 petrol on a card made on a monday for arguments sake...
    • That same evening pay it off using the mbna web site or your online banking....
    • Wait appropriate time (7 days or so ?!) or simply check the mbna statements online to confirm the payment is received....
    • THEN and only THEN (!) action your 0% balance transfers, SBT's or whatever...!
    Worked a charm for me, freebies always follow! Just be sensible and folow the logic of the terms and conditions...

    OK, fair point if you choose to do it that way. But most people surely fill in the details of the balance transfers on their application form? I certainly do.

    Anyway, why bother? You don't NEED to make the purchase to get the incentives - so why faff about as you suggest?
