Sky Broadband! (merged)

No, although they operate satellite TV the broadband is via your phone line. Line rental is £10.50pm from BT [Direct Debit] I think and you only need one phone line as ADSL and voice operate down the same wires.0

i.e. they say you don't have to take their calls package so you could just use the line for broadband.
How about the requirement to have a phone line to use the box for SKY TV, would that be a problem?
I've never had Sky TV but would be very tempted to go with the basic package and tag on the mid level broadband if it meant I could stop paying phone line rental - Am I hopelessly optimistic??
Cheers

Whether you use the line for voice or not it's still a phone line which you can only get by renting. You have several choices who to rent it off with BT the main player of course. Don't suppose you could rent off TT - then have Sky BB, but then again I couldn't be sure.0 -
BT Line Rental is £11 a month as is Talk Talk . However BT give you free caller display with theirs.
You will need a compatible phone line to get BB.(It does not have to be a BT one.(As long as its not cable). Sky T&C say
"Minimum subscription to your chosen Sky Broadband Product is 12 months. You must be a UK active residential Sky TV subscriber throughout your Sky Broadband subscription. Sky Broadband is only available to Sky TV subscribers paying by Direct Debit/continuous credit card mandate. Availability and speeds are subject to your location, a compatible line, equipment and survey."
In any case you need a phone line to have SKY TV in first place.0 -
I too am a Sky subscriber and I too received Sky's mail-shot about their new broadband service. At the moment I receive my broadband by cable from BlueYonder (Telewest) for which I pay £25 per month. I have my own wireless router, which provides broadband to the other PC in my house.
The Sky Max broadband package looks tempting. For a £10pm subscription it offers free connection, a free wireless router (current one, less than a year old, can go on eBay), a download speed of up to 16Mb and free home installation. The only slight fly in the ointment is the Monthly Usage Cap which is shown as 'Unlimited' - but subject to Sky's 'fair usage policy' which they don't detail! The Monthly usage cap for the Mid package is 40Gb, so I'm assuming the usage cap for the Max package must be at least that, but an actual figure would be welcome! I do a bit of P2P each month, but not a lot, so guess I'd probably be OK.
My local exchange is suitable for the Sky Broadband package, and, on the face of it, it's £15 per month (£180 a year) cheaper than my current supplier, so I'm certainly very tempted......
The Sky Talk package also look tempting. At present I'm with Talk Talk, and it costs me about £13pm, plus my BT line rental. Of this total, £7.99 is for my 'free' calls each month, with the remainder on calls to mobiles, etc. Sky are offering the 'free' calls bit at £5pm, so potentially a saving of a further £3pm. But again, they don't show how much their call charges to mobiles will be!
Decisions, decisions...........:undecided

Whether you like Sky TV or not they're a pretty smooth outfit overall in my experience but I wonder whether it might be worth waiting a few months to see how other folks rate them - never volunteer to be the guinea pig, as it were.Regards,

If you've already got Sky which you're paying for anyway - how does staying with your present ISP save you money?
£120 a year for the top internet package compared to the £179.88 is a saving of £59.88 and downloads are unlimited - subject to FUP which is as yet unpublished - but the cheaper medium package is limited to a large 40megs so it's got to be more than that - also it promises up to double most ISPs speeds.
Sure if you're not with Sky it's probably not worth getting it - certainly not one of the top TV and top internet packages. But who said it was?
If you are a Sky subscriber then moneywise it's a good deal that's worth considering. However, I think it's speed, reliability and CS that folk ought to consider when it first starts. My intention is to give it a few months and see what the feedback is but if it's good it would give me a far better internet package than I'm on now and save me £180pa.0 -
I have Sky's top package, and am tempted by their top broadband package @ £10pm.
I'll effectively save about £10pm on my current provider, but I may well wait and see if Sky can live up to the hype that they're giving out.Only time will tell if they may have underestimated the popularity of what they're offering, and their service is no better than any of the others.

Well for me im getting 1mb from Pipex with 1000 free phone calls
So:
Currently:
£23.99 (Pipex) + £10.99 (BT Line Rental) = £34.98
If/when my exchange is LLU enabled, on the assumption that there is no line rental (as has been stated) then its:
£15 (Basic Sky 2mix package) + £10 Sky MAX Broadband = £25
Even if you end up having to pay £5 a month for Sky Talk, im still going to be saving £5 a month, for Sky TV (which i've wanted, but cant afford) and a internet connection up to 16x faster than my existing one.0
