this doesnt make much sense to me... why everyone seems to be able to get their 'connect' package, but not the others. I could understand them not being able to offer the faster package, but not the slower one? sounds like they're trying to get people to cough up money before they start offering the other packages.

unless connect is a resell of another companies service?

any thoughts?

It's all to do with LLU.

What is Local Loop Unbundling?
Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) is the process where the incumbent operators (BT and Kingston in the UK) makes its local network (the copper cables that run from customers premises to the telephone exchange) available to other companies. Operators are then able to upgrade individual lines using DSL technology to offer services such as always on high speed Internet access, direct to the customer.

Almost everyone is able to get the connect service as it's run over BT's enable exchanges but Sky would have to pay BT to use their lines ( if I understand this correctly). Eventually Sky will use LLU and offer their services that way and so the cheaper packages. At the moment something like less than 28% of exchanges in the UK have been enabled in this way for Sky.
• our family have just had sky installed and were realy interested in the mid level broardband package as we have tiscali at the moment who charge £15 a month for 512kb. i've filled in our details but when i hit submit a blank page appears and no infomation on coverage/packages appears. do u know if there is any way of applying by phone ect as we would like to get more infomation on what packages are availible to us. (we live in birmingham so i'd guess it should be covered.)

You can use this site to check your exchange.

http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php

If it's enabled for Easynet then you can get the Sky packages, as opposed to the Connect package.

As for registering with Sky - try again later. I had problems yesterday and everytime I pressed submit, the fields just cleared and I got no info. Tried again later and it was fine.

Got a letter from sky this morning about free broadband and a wireless router. I have just subscribed to btyahoo broadband and am tied in with 12 month's contract. Does anybody know the penalty if I want out? Also my internet connecting keeps cutting off and the problem might be in the connection. It was suggested that I try connecting the ASDL line to the main bt socket and it is such a hassle as I will need to buy a long ethernet cable to be able to do this downstairs. If the problem persists, then BT will send an engineer otherwise if he does not find any fault I will have to pay for the bill. At present I am putting up with the inconvenience. I am also wondering whether having a wireless router might solve the problem. Is there any special security I need to have if I go wireless? I know btyahoo is quite secure, but I think I get sky broadband for free as hubby spends more than £42 on subscription. Also if I want can I still use the bt router instead of the sky wireless router. Sky is charging £50 for installation, is it easy to set up a wireless router. Thanks

you *should* be able to use your own router... but dont turn down skys you can always flog skys router (or your own if you want) on ebay.

I will probably use skys and keep my own router as a backup... skys router will be preset with the settings... always saves you a lot of trouble - im pretty experienced with computers and i hated setting up my router, linksys what a nightmare

EDIT: skys router will come with all the settings preloaded.. therefor its only a matter of setting your network key, and connecting with it using a wireless dongle/card/built in wireless. VERY EASY.

hi all

i see in the paper that sky tv are now offering broadband at £10 a month, for unlimited usage.
i would have some of that but it seems a bit of a con, your have to give your name and address to check if you have it in your area .
companys like ntl and telewest will check this simply by entering your postcode on there website???
i spy a trap like the one the power companys tried where you registered your interest and before you knew it you had changed supplier
since getting stung with that one im very wary:mad:

also it says
"subject to a fair use policy "
but doesnt say anywhere what the fair use policy actually is
ie maximum downloads etc etc:confused:

can anyone shed any light on it?????

Sky have rushed to market with this to whip the competition, but most of us are reduced to guesswork as to when our exchanges will be enabled and that's not good enough.
• Hope you are wrong on this as I have jst registered to find out what service is available in our area.

I am told that I can receive any of the services available, in addition they (SKY) will notify me when would be a good time to Buy. You will find that if when you are filling in the registration card, you leave blank (or put other) when asked for your present ISP.

They may have a job switching without your consent.
