No one can say what is causing it to get rejected, as I have no alarms or other services on my BT line.
Is it just a normal line and not HomeHighway or something? Current linerental costs are £11 if paying by direct debit. I know it sounds stupid but did you supply (or did Sky take down) the correct details such as your name, telephone number and address (I believe post code is more important)? From what I've read, BT have been known to reject orders because these details do not match what BT have for you on their records.

If you placed order over phone then you may have said the correct details but the operator misheard what you said.

Erm, well not quite yet! Seems Sky doesn’t allow its broadband customers access to their SMTP server to send mail!
It has been mentioned on another forum here that Sky will be implementing SMTP (& I assume POP3) servers but will not provide technical assistance.

    Hi,

I'm currently with Orange and would like to move to Sky. Has anyone contacted Orange for an MAC code and have they provided any better deal?

Also how long does Orange take to provide a MAC code?

    Thanks in advance

I applied for my MAC code last Friday, they said it would take 2-3 working days.
They offered me the max package for £17.99 to stay.
The call started in Mumbai but was transferred to the UK cancellations dept.

I think Sky may have pulled off one of the biggest marketing ploys ever here. How serious are they about getting everyone connected, which will cost them money? At the moment they have hundreds of thousands of customers just waiting for the free service, still paying whoever they are with at the moment and not changing providers...

    Hi,

I have just contacted Orange for an MAC code but they have told me that they cannot issue a MAC code because I am on LLU line. They have said to exchange providers I have to cancel my existing broadband which will take 7-10 days then apply with alternative provider. So this means I will be out of internet access for at around 20 days.

What is a LLU line and why I cannot get a MAC code?

Is there anyway around this problem?

    Thanks
    MS

LLU just means they don't use BT's equipment in telephone exhanges and either use their own or another firms. This ultimately saves them money than paying BT.

Currently the use of MAC's is voluntary by ISPs and therefore they are not under any legal obligation but in the case of Orange they do subscribe to Ofcom's voluntary code of practice as listed here.

If you scroll down the page, the link at the bottom (or here in .pdf) is the actual code of practice to which Orange are members. Under the heading "scope", it reads:-
Consumers have no reason to be aware what wholesale product underlies their retail service.

The CoP is therefore intended to apply to migrations of all retail DSL services provided over BT copper loops, whether based on BT wholesale DSL services or those of a local loop unbundling operator (LLUO).
At first glance it appears that the fact that Orange use LLU should not make a difference but then it then goes on to say there maybe other technical reasons for not being able to supply MACs so there is a chance it could be due to technical reasons.

I suggest you ring again and ask for your MAC (hopefully it's a different person) and you may then get your MAC. If this other c/s person states the same then speak to a manager and mention they have signed up to Ofcom's Code of Practice (CoP) on broadband migrations (ie issuing MAC's, etc).

If they ultimately still refuse I dont think nothing can be done because it is only a voluntary code so ISPs are under no legal obligation.

It is normal for Ofcom to issue volunatary codes as it hates to use regulation but most of the time it then has to resort to using regulation as is the case now with broadband migrations because Ofcom are looking into making it a requirement rather than voluntary.

Its because Sky broadband is an LLU (local loop unbundling) in other words Sky/Easynet install their own equipment in the exchange. Until they do you won't be able to get the free service. The connect service uses BT equipment which Sky have to pay more for.
