RobAro wrote:I have Sky broadband Max, self installed 4 days ago, and have just had a very disappointing conversation with their tech support. Seems they have no mail servers, so no SMTP gateway for you to send mail, and the customer portal systems are down and does not work. I was told that these are still in testing ("we are still getting rid of a few bugs"). I switched from Pipex and am beginning to wish I hadn’t! Ok, so I can browse but cannot send or receive email and for me this is more important.
Hi Rob
I checked the email issue with Sky today. They said their email servers were working.
From my existing ISP, I am also having trouble with their web portals. Pings give 100% loss on https://www.skybroadband.com, https://www.sky.com & bband.sky.com. Think it is a DNS problem. Am using 87.240.128.30 & 208.67.222.222
Can you please update your advice? Perhaps a speed report as well. Thanks

Just had an e-mail from Sky to say that I can now get Sky broadband for free.
I'm currently with Orange paying £17.99 for 2Mbs
I know it seems like a no brainer, but does anyone have it, and did the swap go without a hitch. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

Might be a little bit early for anyone to have it yet.0 -

I still cannot find out the wording on this, anybody else, as it's kind of an important point?
Academic for me anyway.... 2007 for my area.0 -
Phoned Sky today to discuss the fact that I am moving house and had previously spoken to someone about needing Broadband in first week of September. It seems that when they were "registering my interest" they were more helpful and, whilst not guaranteeing things, used phrases like "that shouldn't be a problem" and "It will be available early to you as you're in Birmingham", etc etc. I was told to call back to get a definite date as well as being told that a letter would be sent along with an email nearer the time.
Today, I was told that BB would be happening "August/September" as opposed to "first week of September"; that there were NO guarantees or firm dates; that some people had already received equipment and Sky BB was already being installed (though they couldn't tell me where).
The bizarre bit was when I asked where I was in the "first-come-first-served" queue, they couldn't tell me. Apparently the Marketing Department had that information but they were UNCONTACTABLE!!! By ANYONE!!!!! Neither myself or anyone at Sky could ask them where certain customers were in the queue!
On this basis I HAVE to go with another provider. The goalposts keep shifting and the fact that, although SOMEONE has the answers on a secret database, you cannot get a straight answer on ETA of installation makes me very worried indeed. I would suggest that, once again, a rollout of a cheap BB service has been advertised WAAAAAAAAY ahead of having the infrastructure/customer services/technical support to deliver.
My advice: go with someone else and wait till the "bugs are smoothed out", as they like to say!0 -

Ralph,
I have had two calls from Sky. The first was to reassure me that they were working very hard to provide a good service and the second was to inform me that their customer portal was now working. Yippee, I thought! Time to cancel my current ADSL connection on my other BT line and save myself some money. :j
Erm, well not quite yet! Seems Sky doesn’t allow its broadband customers access to their SMTP server to send mail! I currently use Pipex's SMTP server which I will no longer have access to when I end my subscription. So as I tend to like using Outlook rather than web mail I will not be able to send mail without an SMTP server - sux. And as far as I can see there is no mention of Sky not offering this as a service. I would assume that all ISP will provide access to an SMTP service for all subscribers?!?
If anyone has more details please let me know.
For information my current (Wireless) speed is: 1543.1 Kbps or 189.1 K bytes/sec.0 -
I called up Sky to join on the 18th August with my MAC code from my current provider and I was told it would be active within 10 days. I did not receive a activation date or the wireless router so I rang them today and was told that my order was rejected because my BT line was incompatible !! I was then told to contact BT and ask them if there is any problems on the line and suprise suprise, they said No.
I called SKY again and they then said they will have to pass this on to their Provisioning team to investigate.
No one can say what is causing it to get rejected, as I have no alarms or other services on my BT line.
Any advice?0
