I was at homebase yesterday and they did have a few crowns left and they were reduced to £2.50 from £4. It may be worth looking in if you have a homebase or other garden centre near you.

    potatoes.
at this tme of year the leaves are still vunerable to frost so ts best to either fleece them or cover up any leaves that come through with compost.
don't worry about earthing them up too much, they will grow through.
you don't want the tubers going green if the break through the soil.
    Rhubarb
its not too late to plant crowns now(everything is so late ths year) you should still get some growth.
remember no harvesting the first year.

    Hi everyone,

Wanted to show you some pics of my progress so far. They're on Flickr here.

I'm going to order some salad potatoes and planters and some radish and spring onion seeds then I think that's it for this year!

Oh and a few Autumn Bliss raspberry canes going in this week too.

  • Hi all,

I picked up a FABULOUS free booklet from my local Robert Dyas, its called 'All you need to grow your own, from patio to veg plot' (the front cover is pinky purple in colour and has a bowl of radishes on it), Its very plain speaking, to the point and easy to understand and its just as good as my bargain Alan T book!

    Hope that helps someone!

outdoors in the raised bed I finaly have signs of life in the form of Kale(planted 11th April)
Still waiting on carrots/beetroots/all year lettuce,/spring onion,/ and golden acre cabbage to make an appearance...again all sown 11th April..in raised beds covered with fleece.
I planted 6 white and 6 red onions in seperate troughs, but only 1 onion in each is showing a tiny green shoot---didnt help that one of my red onions had been pulled up this morning !!,naughty blackbirds I think.
PS,nearly forgot... on 14th April in a large plantpot i sowed 1 cucmber seed,1 french bean seed, and 1 courgette seed, all inside their own individual toiletroll tube, and they have all now started to sprout through :)
Good luck everyone, heres to a bumper harvest;)
Only a couple of days later and my cabbage and all year lettuce have popped through too.:) got some small fresh green sprouts peeking through the compost in my potato planters, and my tomatoes and cucmbers are still hanging in there...got a problem with mini, tiny, mushrooms appearing in beside my cucumber/courgette/bean pot tho.Oh,and ive got 2 onions each showing green shoots now....its still very very cold at times, but my veggies seem to be coping..slow but sure maybe;)

Hi Kimmee, how long did it take your cucumber to germinate? I sowed some seeds indoors last weekend and I can't see anything (no matter how closely I look!)

Also, can anyone tell me how to tell when tomatoes need potting up? Mine are currently on a window sill in 5" potts, but the tomato plants are about 4" tall at the moment. They seems to still be growing fine, but I don't want to hamper any more growth.

  • I'm being all descouraged at the moment as neither my French beans nor my courgettes are sprouting. I keep looking hopefully at the windowsill - but no luck yet.

Just as a rough guide ... how long did everybody else's seeds take to sprout? Have I killed them off already?
