morg_monster - That's terrible! I think a quiet word with the council is probably in order. He's creating a nuisance and should be treated accordingly. I can understand you being so frustrated! Mummy to an amazing little girl0

Why don't you write him a wee note and just ask politely if he could tell you when he is going to have another bonfire? He may turn out to not be as nasty as the other neighbour says he is. I can understand your frustration though. Our very nice neighbours from a couple of doors down, seem to think that cos it's a wee bit warm, that she should have a BBQ every weekend and even during the week too!!! When we have one, we always warn our neighbours and wait til they have brought their washing in before we start.Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These
(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...:D:D

thanks for all the sympathy everyone! I decided to stop moping about and get out there anyway. I had about 400L of manure to dig into the beds and so I figured if I did it while everywhere was stinking of smoke at least I wouldnt be able to smell the slight poo smell... it worked and i have just got in, utterly knackered after nearly 4 hours of solid digging. WISH i had thought to set the hot water to come on early so I could have a bath...
I have looked at our council's pages about bonfires and printed out a "nuisance bonfire diary" to fill in. Its good to be reminded about this kind of thing though, DH's job for tomorrow is to put our BBQ together... It is a gas one rather than charcoal but still i must remember to be a good neighbour with it!0 -

Hi Everyone, haven't posted on here for a while so time for a quick catch up and another question! Hope you are all enjoying this fantastic gardening weather - sorry to hear about your neighbour having a bonfire morg_monster, but glad you had a productive day in the end!
Most of my plants are doing well, but nothing much to report - strawberries are now outside and doing well, but no flowers yet, salad leaves are going strongly inside and we've started to eat them now and I've planted some more outside too! Carrots aren't doing much and tomatoes are waiting to go outside in the next few weeks... :T
My exciting news (well to me anyway!) is that my second earlies potatoes have started to come through the soil!! My question is, do I cover them with more compost now whilst they are only green shoots or do I have to wait until there are leaves on them or something? Is it as soon as they appear that I need to take action?0 -
morg_monster wrote: »can i rant please... have SO much to do today in the garden, its 21C outside, gorgeous. Put 2 loads of washing out, then popped in the car to run a couple of errands, just came in and the nob down the road has got a big stinking bonfire on and our garden is full of smoke. the washing is all going to have to be rewashed and it is too smokey to be outside. i'm sitting in the house twiddling my thumbs with all the windows and doors closed.
to top it off i discovered on my errands there's something wrong with the car so i can't even go drive somewhere else. I'm so angry i could just cry.
next door told me that the neighbour in question is a "strange, nasty man" and cautioned me against going to say something to him, even to ask if he was going to have another bonfire tomorrow. To be honest he has one on the weekend about every fortnight :-( and god knows how many during the week when we're out of the house. Now i understand why our car is getting so so dirty, its all the bloody soot and ash falling on it.
I started to keep a record and came home at noon to find a raging fire going, yet again another load of washing to re-wash. The smoke was unreal.
I rang up the council, environmental health, explaining the situation, ie. the frequency of them, and they sent out a letter to them (no mention of who has reported them). Since then, we've only had the odd fire or two a week which has always been after dark.
I've also had a phonecall from environmental health informing me of their letter, and suggesting that if the fires start up again, to contact them again.
I hope it works for you xA creative mess is better than tidy idleness0 -
Sorry if this information is already here but ive not read every entry in this thread.Several people have said that they have bought a blueberry bush from poundland. I did couple of years ago but was disappointed as the "blueberry bush"was V Myrtillus also known as bilberry/whortlebery/blaeberry
Blueberry proper the highbush blueberry Vaccinium corybosom is American in origin and not the thing sold in poundland.0 -
