I'm sure I read somewhere (or was I dreaming it?:)) that when you pot on tomatoes that you bury the seed leaves in the compost to make more roots - can anyone tell me please if the same goes for chillis and peppers?
Thanks0 -

They are lakeland exclusive mix salad leaves. On the back of the seed pack it says contents Pak Choi canton white, greek cress, salad rocket victoria, mustard (pizzo and red frills), mizuna http://www.thompson-morgan.com/seeds1/product/4790/1.html
Savingmummy,Ive tried to grow these lakeland seeds too,and after 3 weeks(possibly 4) I only have a tub of what looks like long leggy cress, with a couple of different coloured leaves, some of them are lying flat on the soil, others are straggly with tiny tiny leaves, its as though they didnt develope beyond seedling stage...possibly cos i didnt realise i shouldve thinned them out...maybe my pot is too small,I dunno, but basicaly they have failed, look inedible and are heading for my compost...aw well,at least they were free;)
PS,sorry I couldnt access your facebook to see your photo,so dunno if they have gone the same way as mine or not.Slimming World..Wk1,..STS,..Wk2,..-2LB,..Wk3,..-3.5lb,..Wk4,..-2.5,..Wk5,..-1/2lb,Wk6,..STS,..Wk7,..-1lb.

Hi,
My lovely hubbie made me a raised bed last weekend and I need to know what to put in it!! Have heard two different ways but unsure which is the best way to go!
Alan T's book says a 50:50 mix of compost and 'organic matter' (does that mean topsoil?!?) And a lady at the garden centre near me said just use topsoil with a bag of manure and compost thrown in with it.
Can anyone help please?!
Thanks x0 -
well I filled mine with about 625L of B&Q multipurpose compost (£6.98 for 125L) and then although I had calculated I needed 600L, it wasn't near full so a few days later I chucked in about 250L of "organic compost" = "well rotted manure" which I wasn't convinced was completely rotted. But anyway. I haven't actually planted anything in it yet so can't comment on how good it is going to be. I was totally knackered after mixing up the two layers though - excellent exercise!
i was planning to fill it completely with the B&Q stuff. I would have like to have put some topsoil in there as well but didn't want to pay for it... Topsoil isn't organic matter, btw, that could be manure, or stuff from your compost heap, or leaf compost... really if you need 50% it is probably going to have to be manure. just make sure it is well rotted. you can buy it in bags from homebase or b&q or you might have a friendly stables nearby.0 -
Well my lovely 5 year old daughter has very kindly been playing with my tomato labels  Now I am not sure which tray is the cherry tomato's and which is the larger 'Tomato Castoluto'.
Is it possible to tell them apart ????
I really don't want to be planting the big ones in my hanging baskets.A creative mess is better than tidy idleness0 -
Hey saving mummy, those roundy looking leaves are either lambs lettuce, i suspect its is lambs. Yes one of my bowls is very much like that, but they are growing on.
Lots of my stuff has got scorchedrocket looks like it might bolt but I might be able to salvage. Repotted the courgette and chillis now too they are in their final pots.
I am about to report the pattys- I fear they are not climbers they are more ground based creepers, this is because they literally all look like they are falling overgod knows how Im going to be able to grow these in a containers, I think i shall have to use the big polystyrene box. MORPHEUS- TAKE NOTE!
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -

Or if you know the provenance of one, you could try to get the ones that look the same as that, there are differences between them as seedlings, but it's subtle.
And how big are they?Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

My chives, basil and oregano have popped through the surface this morning just day 7 of sowing! So lovely to see things coming through now.
My money makers are really well too now have small green leaves on the shoots.
hey savingmummy, as promised a pic of the pak choi seedlings. mine are pretty stocky as they were planted about 1.5cm deep so not so leggy... a bit blurry though.

I went out today and came home with 6 strawberry plants (reduced in Homebase from £4.99 to £1.35) and packets of dwarf broad bean, carrot, lettuce and chive seeds... Not to mention another 140l of compost and some more bits from poundland!
My toms are doing well but I'll have to put them into the greenhouse soon. The window that they're in front of have still got quite a few of these little flies (despite my best efforts lol). I can only think it's the toms attracting them as they're nowhere else.
I'm hoping to get more flower buckets for the carrots and I think the lettuces will go into trugs.
Asda seem to have put the price of their trugs up, now £4 and £3 instead of £3 and £2. Mummy to an amazing little girl0
