I need to get myself to the big bootsale on Stafford common, hopefully one or 2 people will be getting rid of some excess plants as back ups in case my seeds don't work!!Ahhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!0

I found a link to this table that all new GYO-ers might like to see, it shows approx cost of GYO v Supermarket prices.

To this I would add French Beans - they are prolific, and can also be used in stir fries as well as a traditional veg - and you will get a good crop from a 1m x 1m square which will accomodate 12 poles, 2 plants per pole.0 -
There is quite a lot of good gardening advice on the which website.Ahhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!0

Thanks for that Sally, very interesting and bear in mind that they were quoting from price per plant bought (in most cases) - if you grow from seed there's much more savings to be had.0 -
I must get outside and resurrect my 4 tier wilko greenhouse that has fallen apart :rotfl:maybe the fact I made it up whilst ill with flu didn't help but I was just so desperate to put it up. The cover is all ripped with holes in and is a sorry sight so going to fix it with sellotape. I'll try and dash out when I've had my cuppa and it's stopped raining :eek:Ahhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!0

I'm also a newbie - I started to propogate some things a couple of weeks ago, I went for the less usually available vegetables as well as some standards. The kohl rabi is coming on well on the kitchen windowsill to transfer into pots and grow on, and I'm growing an Eastern European long beetroot - ghe seeds went into a big pot and will be thinned later. I'll swap any excess for other vegetable plants from friends. My salad greens are beginning to appear in their pot.. as is my garlic.
I have a bit of garden, and a friend opened a trench for me to put in a bed. It's old agricultural land here, and though the soil is a bit heavy, there were earthworms in it. I've dug it, cleared any stones, and added in some organic matter (well-rotted grass clippings etc - about 2 years old..), some wood ash and bonemeal for fertiliser, and planted lollo rosso, bean plants and celeriac this morning.
I notice that the birds have already uprooted one celeriac plant! I hadn't thought if that, but have been giving some thought to the slugs. Coffee grounds for one thing, and beer for the other. I'll let you know if my slug traps work - I've sunk some small flowerpots around the beds, lined them with plastic bags and put some beer in them. The plan is to replace the bags periodically and put in fresh beer to draw the slugs away from my lettuces!
Any cheap beer will do, they even love the alcohol-free type (and it's a lot cheaper as there is no duty on it!)0 -

Mine got attacked by a gale. DH and I had to make an emergency rescue at 1am. Lost some of my plugs, but most survived. The greenhouse has a few rips and I've used homebase garden tape (bit like duct tape) to fix it and hold some of the poles together. I was going to get a new cover, but it was going to cost nearly as much again. Not the most attractive but it works!
Just had another trip to Homebase and B&Q. Got some spring onion, silverskin onion, leek and pumpkin seeds.
Ooh, it's just started thundering and lightning here... Mummy to an amazing little girl0 -
