Hi Kimmee, how long did it take your cucumber to germinate? I sowed some seeds indoors last weekend and I can't see anything (no matter how closely I look!)
Also, can anyone tell me how to tell when tomatoes need potting up? Mine are currently on a window sill in 5" potts, but the tomato plants are about 4" tall at the moment. They seems to still be growing fine, but I don't want to hamper any more growth.
Hi Antonia,
Mine took about 2 weeks, but i think it depends on the soil temp etc. i sowed them in loo rolls and when i potted them up, my oh my, what long roots they had!
I pot up my tomatoes as soon as they've developed their first set of 'true leaves'. My first lot keeled over because because i squished their stems a bit too hard when i separated them (was wearing marigolds!). Now i hold them with my bare hands and only hold them by their seed leaves.0 -

Woo hoo, toms are standing up again! Put them back on the sunny windowsill and up they went. SUZIEMUM - thanks for your comment just wondering though why is it best not to water from the top? Heard this before but not sure why!
Also, can anyone explain what setting seed/self seeding is. Have read that this can happen if you dont dead head flowers but not sure what it means or why it happens! Thanks x0 -
Hello everyone!
Haven't been on here for a while but been busy busy. House is a right tip and havan't done any ironing for AGES cos if I have any spare time I spend it in the garden!!
Last night we planted in 2 apple trees, a hazelnut bush and some raspberry canes. Got to tell you the funniest story though. We bought raspberrys last year they did nothing and just looked like sticks in the garden. We came to a decision they were dead so fetched them out. I went to the garden centre on my own to buy a new raspberry lot. I bought 10 canes and we put them in. Stared at them for a while then have come to decision they look EXACTLY like the ones we have dug out and binned!!! Oh well newbies we are!
My peas are doing really well and I have hardened off and put outside my toms, peppers and chillis and they are doing great. I have 4 cherry tomatoes to harden off this week thoguh but they are lpoooking a bit tall and spindly so they need to do some bulking out. They have suffered from the droop you are all talking about.
Also put loads of sweetcorns in but they are all dead. Not sure what I did wrong but I have some more seedlings indoors so will have to see what they do.
Only 3 of my 8 courgettes came through so am hoping they all end up doing well as I only wanted 3 plants anyway. My they are sturdy looking seedlings aren't they? Not like the tiny things I have been growing so far!0 -
If your raspberries didn't grow at all last year, then you did the right thing by putting new ones in as the old ones will be very dead.
Too cold for sweetcorn yet, that's your problem!Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
Hey everyone
I think I have run out of room ha ha ha
I am still keen to know if anyone is/has managed to grow sweet potatoes. I don't eat normal potatoes so no point in growing them!0 -
Hope you manage to get some of the legendary black buckets elantan. Pots are so expensive otherwise aren't they, I spent £20 on eBay buying them cos I couldn't find or recycle anything else
Littleme96, I'd have said exactly the same thing myself lol!!Ahhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!0 -
I'm about to go out and check how the toms got on last night. Metcheck have helpfully changed their forecast and there is now frost forecast next week. I think I'll put them in the garage on those nights.
I'm really worried about things not growing or getting diseases! Think that's why I started so slowly, just getting a few plants, but I got bitten by the gardening bug and I'm just giving everything a go now. I keep saying they all have two choices, live or die, but really I'll be gutted if they don't thrive.
I got spring onion, silverskin onion, leek and pumpkin seeds on Sunday so I'll see how they all go.
Managed to get more buckets yesterday too. They didn't have any out, but I remembered someone saying to just ask, and sure enough I got some. Mummy to an amazing little girl0 -
