When planting courgette and other squash seeds, make sure you plant them on their side. If they are planted flat there is a danger that water will collect on them and they will rot. Courgettes are a wonderfully easy plant to grow that you can pop in any vacant corner of the garden. I start mine off inside around now then plant them out late May. I always plant out several plants at a time so that at least one hopefully won't get eaten by the slugs. Once the fruit starts emerging get ready to pick or they will turn to marrows while you're back is turned. I love them fried or oven-roasted.

Hi Lotus Eater,
How low is too low? It's been around 18 degrees in the afternoon (got sunburnt whilst having lunch in the park today!) and 10 degrees at night and i've planted my minipop sweetcorn out yesterday.
But just checked the weather forecast and it seems like this sunday is going to be around 3 degs at night - should i uproot them and bring them back in? Thanks for your help.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

thanks, i've cut some plastic bottles into two to use as cloches this weekend.
Hopefully they survive - got 3 of them for £1.49 at Squires as the ones I put in modules didn't germinate after about 3-4 weeks. If they die I think I'll give up trying to plant sweetcorn altogether.0 -
I've put plastic bottles over the lettuce that have now been thinned out and planted in between the garlic and onions. Also hoping they will help keep the few remaining slugs away if they avoid the pellets.0

Wilko 4 tier original greenhouse cover is just awful, just ripped away in matter of weeks so have bought a replacement cover still from wilko but much better quality, £5.97. Oh and they had 2 pack plastic 'salad growing bags' £2.97. Got some instead of the trugs I was going to buy. The ripped scrunched up plastic cover I will keep and make a cold frame out of save throwing it away!Ahhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!0

Anyone know if my tomato plant is okay? Leaves look a bit odd... Mummy to an amazing little girl0 -
I think I may have got a bit carried away with myself and made a few over excited muck ups lol
ive planted anything and everything and the first 30 seedlings are unknown as i cant remember what i put where :O but guess ll have to work that out as they get bigger
my main concern is courgettes, theyre growin in a seed tray, very nicely by the looks of it but after reading the packet properly ive seen they need to go in the ground far apart and i havent got the space! do they spread? i have a patio tub, would it be ok just to put them in that? I have 8 of them though
secondly my carrots are in 9cm pots, theyve just started sprouting- very thin tho so could be weeds lol when do i put them into my vegetable patch? they look so small an dainty it scares me!0 -
Garnetlady, i too have a couple of tomato plants with leaves similar to yours, i thought it was because i watered them with the hosepipe (spray mode), and thought they were like water scorch marks..........thats what i was hoping anyway, i'm no expert its my 1st year of growing veg, so hopefully someone with a bit more experience will come along and tell us it's nothing to worry about.0

Might have to see if I have one of those anywhere near here. Quite how I'll persuade my husband to go is another story... :rotfl::heart: Mummy to an amazing little girl0
