I might hang on for an N1 in case a deal turns up.0

You can get the N1 SIM free from the USA... It is cheaper than via play but you may have to pay duty and VAT. But still cheaper. There are many reports of people not paying the import taxes. In the mean time.... Enjoy....

If anyone interested about the N1
That's answered my question.
I've heard the Desire might be able to record 720 HD video on the next software update. Will that be true for the N1 at some point ?
If either of these had a TV out it would be the 100% deciding factor. At present I have to carry my ipod and video lead around to watch my loaded films on a decent size TV while away.
If the N1 or Desire gave me that function I could bin the ipod !0 -

I had an Nokia N73 on T-Mobile and that was locked to their network and also had a lot of T-Mobile software on it and T-Mobile case branding.
.
The Orange version is a nightmare. They've hidden some HTC apps so you can't use them (because Orange have their own version's), but they're still running in the background and you can't stop them even with third party tools as they start running again. And that not taking into account the amount of space they take up !0 -

The noise cancelling mic on the N1
An FM Radio on the Desire.
Speech to text on the N1
That said, ther N1 has the capability of having an FM radio it is just not "enabled" so I have read. I have also read that there is a way of "enabling" this feature. Possibly by rooting the device. Also you can add speech to text to the Desire.
The reason the tariff for the N1 is much more expensive is the device itself is more costly than the Desire. The noise cancelling mic is one such part that pushes the cost up.
Also the N1 is totally unlocked and free from network operator's "clag".
I think googleplex have said it must be distrubuted unrestricted. Possibly to allow for the "over the air" updates of "vanilla" Android as opposed to Android with HTC sense or Android with "network operators rubbish".
Therefore being unlocked and unrestricted I guess the handset subsidy is less thus pushing the cost up. At Play.com it is £599
You missed out the trackball on the N1 which has been replaced by an optical trackpad on the Desire. Small difference I know, but lots of people have had trouble with the trackball.0 -

Did Orange not do this with the Tattoo making it difficult to get gmail apps.
I assume it is better to avoid Orange due to their temptation to fiddle with the HTC mobiles?0 -
That must be why Orange owners are rooting their phones. It is a fiddly job but if you make a "gold card" and do a few other things it is probably worth it to remove the rubbish loaded on by a network provider. The only thing is - it ruins your warrantee. Maybe that is why Vodafone released the N1 as they do not seem to fill handsets with their own branded rubbish. Maybe google wouldn't like Orange et al messing with their baby?
I don't need to root the N1 and I much prefer the "vanilla" Android UI as opposed to HTC sense.
I have it on good authority now that N1 users will get FroYo as soon as it is ready by an Over The Air Update.
After FroYo comes Gingerbread - as if Android could get better!0 -
The Three ones are still unbranded, if you can get your hands on one.Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

HTC Desire currently stores applications on the ROM not the micro sd card so no issue (might gain the ability to use the micro SD card in Android 2.2?). The sync software for the phone is on the supplied card so you might want to fish that off onto your PC (and new card to allow access wherever you are). Hope that helps a bit.
thanks, if i root the phone and install apps on the card, can these apps be transferred to the new 16gb memory card?0
