Quick question for those of you who have mentioned collecting wood from various places for your fires.

We have a garden full of branches of buddleia cut down last summer and getting rid of it is difficult as we don't drive. I hadn't put it on freecycle as I didn't think anyone would be interested, but now I'm wondering if I should have done.

Do you think anyone would want it, or is it the wrong type of wood (and is it too late - though the weathers still pretty chilly)?

Thanks in advance for any answers. :)

Hiya, we burn garden branches in a metal bin in the garden to save taking it to the tip.
On our coal fire we burn free wood and some bought logs. The free wood is from roof rafters, DIY jobs, some from neighbours. One of our neighbours is a builder and brings us wood around as it saves him paying for the disposal.
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
    Spring begins on 21st March.

We tried burning some in the garden when we first started trimming but unfortunately we live in a small terraced house and at the moment 80% of the garden is covered in the darn branches so there's no space to burn it safely (and we have to take into consideration the neighbours too).

It's really annoying as you have to go through the whole house to get to the garden and just filling the last skip was nightmare enough.

What's also really annoying is, I phoned the council and if they decide you are eligible you can have 1 free roll of garden sacks a year (to be eligible you can't have a vehicle etc). It's also annoying as these bags of garden waste won't be recycled but go straight to landfill where as if you have a car (we don't) you can take it straight to be recycled or there are 2 locations in the city once a moth that you can also drop off to and they'll take it for recycling.

I'm going to try and see if my uncle has a van and would be able to help us out, otherwise I don't know how we will ever get the garden cleared - I haven't been able to use the garden in about 3 or 4 years and really fancy a nice barbecue when the sun comes out!

Anyway today was a very frugal day!

I saw a Beading book in WH Smiths and really wanted it but wasn’t going to pay £15 for it, so I thought I’d try and get it from the library but looking at it again decided I needed my own copy as theres so many great instructions and projects in it, Anyway I finally found it for about £6 online and having waited a couple of weeks for it to arrive it was finally delivered this morning!

Then we went to the church fete and I got a toy and a free creme egg for 50p. Then some craft bits I’d been wanting for 60p (would have cost £2 in the shops). My mum bought some home made cakes and stuff for us which were very tasty too!

Saw a few other things I liked but decided I didn't need them at all so was good and saved my pennies! My mum picked up 5 brand new puzzle books (inc 1 with a pen) for just £1.

Then we went to the community fun/info day. Picked up lots of freebies (could have had more but I didn't need them really)! Pens, pencils, notebook, tote bag etc. Free tea to but we couldn’t find the free bacon rolls!

Spoke to the fire service who are offering a fire safety check and alarm with 10 year battery if you need one.

Popped home for lunch and I gave my mum some bags I'd saved for her, some earring backs her friend wanted, and scanned and printed some photo's for her.

Then popped to the shops. Got some bargains in co-op that weren’t in stock in my local one which was fab.

Have been trying to find decent and cheap Alice bands and so far found 2 for 99p in Primark the best – today in the pound shop I picked up a 5 pack and they are just what I’ve been looking for all along!

Popped in CS and bought the box set of the Chronicles of Narnia for just £1.75 (and they don't even look like they’ve been read)! I’ve been trying to collect them for ages, and had seen them in another CS for £8 but as I already had 4 of them it wasn’t really worth it, so I feel I got a fab bargain today!

Then my mum got us a taxi home as she was worn out (which was great for me as my bad back was playing up)!

So all in all a very frugal day!

Today I pruned the hedge and got the willow withies for making a frame for my sweetpeas and also to put into the fower beds to stop the cats using them as a toilet. Also a piece of pork reduced from £10 to £6 at the supermarket.

  • Oh my...I'm on a roll....visited a friend/neighbour last night and she was desperate to get rid of a 1904 Singer Sewing Machine complete with wooden box.... fabulous condition:j

I just bought my first ever machine a few weeks ago - but I couldn't say no - it's soooo pretty:o

We had the (free) pigeon for tea with local samphire cooked in garlic butter. I wouldn't say I didn't like it...but it was very 'liver-y' Will braise it next time - maybe with some of my blackberry jelly (foraged) for a touch of sweetness. I will like pigeon...this chap seems to shoot a few dozen at a time!!!:T

A plank of wood (for standing on when digging the allotment), and a galvanised bin with a lid, from a skip, with permission. And the builder said "take whatever you like", so I'll be keeping an eye on the skip!

In the interest of being nice, I have just popped my Rachel Allen juicer on freecycle. Hope someone gets some use out of it!
