Bank: NatWest
Amount Reclaimed: £114.00
Amount they paid: £144.00
The story: You know the story.... Final letter from litigation department said they still believed they were right and we were wrong but amount was so small it wasn't worth their bother defending, so they sent a cheque for the full amount!0 -
Bank: Barclaycard
Amount Reclaimed: £360
Amount they paid: £144
Sent letter + spreadsheet of charges and received a pretty pathetic reply.
Second letter was sent(again with spreadsheet of charges) and a few days later received a "goodwill gesture" of £144. They said in no way was this an admission of liability!!!
Since when do banks give goodwill gestures!!!
Replied to this by accepting £144 as part payment but i will be seeking the rest back.
Two phonecalls later and receiving two similar letters saying the £144 was their final offer, barclaycard have untill Friday before moneyclaim gets started!!!!
Still to hear back from Lloyds regarding £2600 in charges they have robbed from me!!!
Its like playing Deal or No deal!! Waiting for the banker to make you an offer!!!!0 -
Credit Card:Royal Bank of Scotland
Amount reclaimed: £12.00
Amount they paid: £12.00
The story:
I have succeeded reclaiming payments for late payment of credit card bills and overdraft fees previously, but RBS put up a fight when I exceeded my credit limit by £200. I wrote to them twice - second time threatening court action and was refunded the penalty fee.0 -
First Direct

Bank : Royal Bank of Scotland
Amount Reclaimed : £3,080
Amount they paid : £2,850
The story:
Sent the usual first and second letters to my branch, then received a letter back offering me £205, which i politely declined and reminded them they had 7 days before court proceedings were started. Their time expired and because i was skint and couldn't start the moneyclaim bit straight away, thought id' phone them last friday to see if they wanted to make another offer. Got told it was now with head office, spent ages on hold with them who said a letter had been sent out, which i though was a stall tactic but one was there when i got home saying they had lost my details
emailed them the details monday, while also stating i would give them a grace period in light of the phone contact until 5 pm yesterday. heard nothing back so chased a few times yesterday, finally spoke to someone useful who said another letter had been sent out, told him that wasn't good enough and would start the court stuff. he then told me the amount there and then, and to my surprise a letter arrived today which i will be accepting!!
i was tempted to go for the other 200 quid, but for the time it will take to wait for a court date etc it aint worth it. also i know i've actually been given some charges back before so technically i've got them twice, plus 8% apr which i also claimed is a nice rate of interest for money i think! i've also been a clown with money for 6 years, so i don't mind letting them off a tiny bit
if anyone is thinking it's too much hassle, it isn't, it took me 3 hours in total, so almost £1k per hour, which is a very good rate! lol
wanna say thanks to martin and others on here for their stories, i wouldn't have bothered otherwise.0 -
tried charging me £75 for going overdrawn £22!! wrote in lots of letters threatening court. took them to court through online claims and got all my money back including court fees. definitely worth doing, just be persistent as bank will just keep saying that their charges are lawful and reasonable.0

Hello. I just successfully reclaimed £20 bank charge for going over overdraft limit for 1 day. I wasn't sent a letter or received a phone call so asked them how they justified the charge. I told them I had paid extra interest for borrowing their money. They agreed to refund the charge but declined to tell me how they arrived at the £20 saying they did not have to divulge that information as it was 'sensitive business information'. Although glad to get my £20 back, I am astonished that banks feel they are allowed to take your money without having to explain.0

Bank: Halifax plc
Amount Reclaimed: £4,500 (I was actually owed about £6K with interest but wanted to stay in small claims)
Amount they paid: £4,620 (inc. court costs)
The story:
Wrote first letter based on your template.
Had letter back saying no deal
Wrote again saying I would take them to court
Had letter back saying no deal
Wrote again saying I had taken them to court
Had letter back (crossed with mine) saying they would try to reach agreement with eight weeks
I did nothing
Had a letter from them saying they would refund the full amount whilst not admitting liability. They said it would cost them too much to go to court (even if they won).
Since the first letter, I have actually been charged around another £300 ...am still thinking about trying to get this back too.
So thank you guys...0 -
Have successfully reclaimed bank charges + interest and court fees from the Halifax. Total 1834.52. Ignored first offer of £400 and followed guidance from this site. Thanks very much.0

Bank - First Direct (Boo!)
Amount Claimed - £1840
Amount Paid - £1550Story - Wrote and asked for my statements over the last 6 years and for my charges to be refunded. They sent the statements through, but made no mention of the charges request. I then sent a 'letter before action' letter, in a similar format to the one on the MSE site, but tailored to my circumstances; requesting the refund again and stating how upset i was with the lack of reply.
I received a letter in 5 days saying they would have a reply for me within 10 days. I then received an offer for the amount above 'without predjudice', stating they were confident they would win any court case, but think that the administration and legal costs of it would outweigh the benefits (yeh right...). The money was paid into my current account within 2 days.
Thankyou so much to the MSE and CAG for their help, i am having a stress free Christmas now xxxxx
