  • Bank: Natwest
Amount Reclaimed: £1032 before interest and fees
Amount they paid: £1480.10 inclusive of interest and fees
    The story:

I decided to reclaim my bank charges after seeing the tonight programme back in may, i joined the consumeractiongroup and sent my first letter asking for my statements on 7th June, i stuck religiously to the timeline and the bank went as far as letting me get a court date. i was offered £798 as a "goodwill gesture" which i decline and then 3 weeks later, on 1st November (19days before my court date) i received my cheque.

There were times when i felt that it wouldn't work and i was going to give up BUT with the encouragement of the people on the consumeractiongroup site i carried on and persevered and got what i claimed back.
  • Barclays Bank sent me a letter today confirming they have credited my account with 100% of my claim. This whole process has taken me less than 6 weeks start to finish. I would urge anybody who has paid bank charges to follow the steps of The Consumer Group, it really is very clear and easy to follow. Good Luck All
  • bank: Amex
    claim: £25
    they paid: £25

    bank: Barclaycard
claim: £50 (£40 charges plus £10 fee for document provision)
    they paid: £40

    BUT:
citicards £125 - have refused to pay up due to the case in NI - have not decided whether to threaten court yet
    HSBC £125 - awaiting response

Amzing that they just paid up, at the threat of court, given the amount you wanted back. Well done :)

Well done. As a note to anyone else who has already started a claim - don't back down at any point. It will be the bank that will, so don't let them scare you.

Might be worth contacting the OFT in relation to closing the account. I don't know if they would get away with it if you make a fuss, given the fact that you have executed your right by getting the charges back, given the legal issues around them in the first place. They have T&C for charges, but that doesn't stop us, so same could apply to their condition of closing the account when they want to. Also if you pay for an account, as I do, then if they tried doing it in that case, you'd probably have even more in your favour. I'm yet to see anything happen in relation to closed accounts or the attempt to do so, after a settlement of a charges claim. Could be an interesting test case.
