  • Bank: Sainsbury's Bank
    Amount claimed: £12
Amount received: £12 (small I know, but better off in my pocket)

I was late paying a credit card bill (my fault I was on holiday and forgot). It is a 0% card at the minute and the minimum payment I missed was £5. I may be wrong but £12 charge is a 240% charge. Proportionate? I think not. I tried the phone and got short change. "We have reviewed our charges sir and reduced them to £12 from £25, so we can't refund anymore". I read on this web page that they actualy reduced their charges because the regulator told them to!!! So I wrote a letter and got my money back today. Well done Sainsburys. Another victory for the small man.
  • Hi Dan,
I'm in the same situation mate, but the way I look at it is, they made an agreement to lend me money, so long as I keep the repayments up, they can't just call it in. Go for it! I was in two minds, but like everyone else, it's our money & they took it. The only bad point is, you can only claim 6yrs!!
They have until 25th Nov to answer court summonds. Watch this space!!
  • Bank: HSBC
    Amount Reclaimed:£130
    Amount they paid:£130
    The story:
On behalf of my husband. He had an HSBC student account, which incurred charges in 2003.
Wrote to them in May 2006 requesting £130, first response was he needed to provide more detail of the charges, he asked at his branch for copy statement, duly given.
Further letter sent, £100 offered, declined stating £130 would be required in full and final settlement and we expected payment in 28 days. No letter but a cheque and a with compliments slip sent on day 26.

  • Hi all,
This is my first post but I've been a regular reader of the forums for a while now. Thanks to all the great advice about claiming bank charges, I've managed to reclaim mine!! :T

In the last two and a hlf years me and my partener have had just over £2500 of charges, It was a night mare, It all stemmed from us losing our jobs, slowly but surely the charges got more and more until we were getting charged up to £90 a day on a regular basis!! Any ways to cut a long story short:

Three weeks ago I wrote the letter to Halifax, within two days they had acknowledged my letter and sent me one back to say they were dealing with it. Today, we received a letter back offering us £1778 :j

We are accepting this as some of the charges were our fault, and we never imagined an offer of this much. So it looks like we'll be okay for xmas. We've got out of the rut and aren't getting bank charges anymore, this has been through a lot of hard work to ensure the charges stopped.

Any way Thanks to everyone on this site, I have been so encouraged to do this and I'm so glad We did!!!

  • Bank: Morgan Stanley Credit Card
    Amount Reclaimed: £100
    Amount they paid: £100
The story. I just had 5 late payment charges of £20 Each. I pay the balance off each month but had sent the payment late.

I followed the beginners guide, they offered £48, I sent a letter back saying i still viewed the £100 as unfair/disporportionate (no mention of court). They took a couple of weeks but have written back today offering the full £100, which I accept.
  • can i ask you how they paid out?did you have a option to receive a cheque or was it automatically paid into your hsbc account.
  • Bank: Alliance and Leicester
    Amount - £50 2x£25 unauthorised overdraft charge.
    Refunded: £50

I wrote a letter questioning the wisdom of their charging a customer of a mere two months standing for going sixty-two pence overdrawn on saturday, especially as a result of a standing order to my savings account with the same bank. This had been delayed by the weekend until the Monday.

In the meantime I put ten quid in the account to stop the rot, but the twist in the tale was a letter saying they were gonna roll me again, the aforesaid charges taking me again over the limit. I logged into my account and saw that in fact I'd been credited - so like the hitchhiker says DON'T PANIC when you get A Letter From The Bank.

There's a great article in the money section of the Sunday Times about a lady that has claimed back £6K in charges from 3 different banks and got the full amount each time although she had to send bailiffs into her local natwest (after getting a ccj) before they decided to pay up (oh how I wish I was there when they went in! :D )

    Amount Claimed: HSBC Was £1900.50
    Now with added 8% Interest = £2488.43 + £120 Court Fee
Oh plus 55p a day in further interest.

Well the latest on my battle with the HSBC - MCOL details raised and £120 paid, got a little bit nervous when I read that they had acknowledged the claim. However on Saturday I received an offer of £1700 in full and final settlement. Wrote nice polite letter saying will accept as an installment but unless I receive the rest my court action will be ongoing. Will keep you all updated.
