Bank: HSBC
Amount Reclaimed: approx £680 (can't remember now!)
Amount they paid: The lot
The story:
Wrote to them asking for them back.
They said 'no can do'.
I said 'fine, I'll take you to court'.
They said 'ok, ok - how about half?'.
I said 'no, full lot or court'.
They said 'ok, have the full lot back and leave us alone'
I said 'Ok'
Of course I'm only briefly summarising what happened.
Took about 4 weeks from posting first letter to get the money back in my account. That was in May.Proud DFW Nerd #62

Bank: Capital one
Amount Reclaimed: about £250
Amount they paid: £250 + court costs + interest
The story:
Wrote to them asking it back - several letters went on and in the end they refunded £60 then said they could do no more.
Started court claim online. They then caved in and agreed to pay it all back plus costs and interest. I amended the agreement so that I would be able to claim from them again in future and accepted. That took about 7 or 8 weeks from start to finish.
And since then they charged me again, which was actually down to them, they didn't send me a statement and I thought I had totally cleared my balance and I hadn't quite and they charged me for a missed payment. When I realised I got on the phone and told them in no uncertain terms they better pay it back and they did there and then. And that was despite ALL the correspondance from them saying they would not refund any further charges.Proud DFW Nerd #62

Tedrick wrote:Hi,
Just started my voyage into the world of 'reclamation of bank charges', i have sent off a letter to both RBS and Halifax, before doing so i spoke to each, and explained the situation. RBS were very hush hush about it and claimed, quote;
We'll see about that, i think RBS stands at £500ish, awaiting statements.
Halifax on the other hand, were very proffesional about it, fully upto speed about it and even gave me the full process as how to claim, basically word for word off Martins front page ad!!
That stands at again, £500 ish and i am awaiting a response.
I'll post as i know.
Thanks for the info MSE.com:p
Having waited 12 days with no response from either bank, i contacted Halifax via telephone, they claime dthat nothing had had progressed as the charge for just the information on charges is £5 and they didn't want to take this out without my authority (Although i stated in a letter that the £10 max charge was acceptable?). The lady on the phone was very polite and actioned the £5 charge over the phone, thus pushing it along a little.
I asked her, "Well you know i'll be sending in requesting all of the charges back next? can we just skip this part and get straight to business"
But apparently its a no no...
RBS tele-banking wouldn't talk to me, i have to take it up with my branch apparently, so i will tomorrow....CPW Retail

Bank: NatWest (me)
Amount Reclaimed:345.88
Amount they paid:345.88(eventually)
The story: Initially they repaid me £76 which a little wierd as that's how much they owed my partner. I did have to take them to MoneyClaim court and got everything back, after sending the bailiffs round. Sucess!
Bank: NatWest (partner)
Amount Reclaimed:£76
Amount they paid:£66
The story: Maartijn decided that it wasn't worth taking them to court over £10 so settled for the £66.
Bank: HSBC
Amount Reclaimed:£145
Amount they paid:£145 plus they waived the £10 DPA fee.
The story: HSBC did pay straight away -ish. They sent me letters addressed to the wrong person (SA Swann instead of EL Swann), sent everything but one letter to my old address (although I clearly stated to sent all correspondence to my current address), I really had to push to get my "waived" DPA fee back as they cashed the blummin cheque, and then, eventually, they settled. This did dissapoint me a little as i was looking forward to getting my hands on all that juicy interest that would have accrued - about 3 or 4 years worth. Nevermind though, at least i got the money back!Nemmer Nossage :rotfl: :j

My first claim was with HSBC
Claimed £1065
Sent 1st letter - no responce
Sent 2nd letter, 3 days later had an offer for £960, I accepted this as this was a while ago and was not too sure how the process went - and was very happy to be getting some money back.
Now am claiming with Nationwide and thanks to this site and the Consumer action group know what I am doing.
Nationwide were served today for the grand total of £4300 including the 8% interest which worked out huge as all these charges were from 4 - 6 years ago, and court fees, they have til the 28th to respond :eek:Any spelling mistakes are entirely on purpose to check you're paying attention0 -

Yes of course you should take it further. I think after writing the first letter they may think it easier just to pay you back.
DONT give in!0 -
oopsie wrote:I didn't know how much I could claim from first direct so I just made up a number --- £870 --- They wrote back within three days saying I was way off course and offered £390 to settle it. I ACCEPTED. So.... no paperwork and no request of charges just faced up to them and they caved...
Great.... Now I will try it with my credit card. -- An MBNA card I have had for years ( keep it as it is an affinity card)... I'll let you know how I get on
Now that really made me laugh, well done you0
