stitchup wrote:Hi had a loan with HFC aka Household bank that was through pc world for pc back in 03, in 04 i took another loan out with them stupid i now, but looking at the paperwork i can see that i have been charged £553.73 for the settlement of the previous loan. Do you think ive got any chance of getting that back seems a lot to me.
Basically no as the interest on a loan account is spread over the term of the loan.0 -
melaney_delaney wrote:I wrote to HSBC just before Xmas asking them to refund £2036 of charges on three accounts. They tried fobbing me off by saying they didn't have to analysis my account for me (I sent in copies of highlighted statements as suggested) and if I wanted them to look into the charges I had to send it in in a table. Luckily, (being particularly sad!) I had already typed all the info into Excel so I just e-mailed it to them saying if I hadn't got the money back by 5th Jan, I would be going to court.
By 8th Jan I hadn't heard from them so I sent a email informing them I was going to court. Before I had chance to complete the court paperwork, I received a letter from them offering me £1875. Needless to say I bit their hand off. The money was credited into my account a couple of days ago. They haven't told me they're going to close the account (yet) but I already have another account with Halifax anyway.
Its not actually recommended that you highlight and send in your statements rather that you prepare the list of charges, with dates etc as you will need this if your case goes to court.

Just had another look at the paperwork and it says, quote, You authorise us to deduct fromthe loan for our own benefit the sum of £553. 73 in settlement of account numbered, xxxxxx. That was for a bit of paperwork due to a swop situation, is that still a no?0 -
well thanks to martin and his web site i too went to RBS to reclaim my bank charges and i am getting a total refund of my charges as a gesture of goodwill but the bank isn't happy about it said they didn't think their charges were unreasonable but who cares cos i set up another bank account somewhere else and am now getting £3261.23 back in all my bank charges that they have taken me from me so thanks martin :money: :T RESULT :T0

I take it you ended that loan early to start the new one? I'm not saying this is "right" but loan companies will calculate the interest they would have had from you had you continued with the loan and charge it as an early redemption fee.0

Hi all,
We've been looking at this for a long time now and are determined to get our money back. Our problems begin with how many accounts we have, we're all over the place. To start the ball rolling I have sent away the first request to BOS for the list of charges. I'll do this one first, then I'll tackle the credit cards.
I always thought I kept every statement, but I'm missing a few, 2002-3, 2/3's of 2004 for a start and various months here and there. So have sent away my first letter. I was completely taken aback when I counted up what I did have (fab calculator saved me loads). £2303.98 with interest! I really had no idea it was quite so much and I don't even know the whole amount yet.
:T
My concern is that I've been with BOS for nearly 20 years and despite my problems I alway found the service good, especially in my branch (at least until halifax plc took over). Also I have a £2000 overdraft which regrettably is maxed after xmas, would they pay up and close down? Possibly... and then there's my websaver and the ISA... Plus I'm in Scotland.
But I do have another current account already with another bank and could really do with the money.
Another problem I had a while back was with Intelligent Finance. Looked good on the screen when I applied for both the current account and the £10K personal loan. About a year later we went through a rough spot as many here could and have described and charges started to escalate.
Things got a bit hot and we had to come to an agreement to pay off the £600 on the £500 overdraft and the loan. We moved accounts to conserve what cash we could from the charges. We stuck to the agreement for a few months and then were baffled by a letter in the mail telling us the overdraft had been passed on to a debt collector! We contacted IF collections who were seemingly helpfull. They said it had been a mistake and promised to resume the arrangement. Next we got another letter from another collection agency demanding the full amount of £650 now! IF weren't interest and to keep the peace I paid this in full even though we could ill afford it.
However... 1 month later in comes my statement telling me I now owed £720 on the overdraft!!! And more charges. I called, no-one knew what was going on, I was promised a call back. This never materialized. And then the worst happened; they sent the loan to the agency too, again while we still had the agreement in place.
Raging, I called IF demanding that the agreement be put in place and that I would NOT deal with the agency again. A rather nasty boot told me bluntly that it was no longer their problem, and have a nice day.
I have now been defaulted on the £7k still outstanding, and how about irony for you because I was nearly back in financial shape and had even offered to overpay on the payments to come back in line. Now with shocking credit I can only go for a crappy cashcard account.
Anyway... These charges I will now be pursuing too.
This just goes to show how easy it is to get lazy and complacent with your finances. The big bad banks just walk all over you.

I am about to take Alliance & Leicester through the small claims procedure to try and get back the £1200 they owe me.
On one of the other threads I have read that you send all your initial letters to one address for A & L but when it comes to sending the court papers you have to give a different address.
Why is this???
Wouldn't it be easier to send the court papers to the same address as all of the rest of the letters that have already been sent? That way the people that get the papers already know that I have been in contact, rather than sending them to a different office where they don't know who I am.
Can someone please verify the address I should be sending the court papers for Alliance & Leicester?0 -
You need to send the court papers to the Registered Office of the bank as you are in effect suing the bank.

First Direct.
Claimed £655.00. Paid £490. Sent them an e-message via their online banking service which listed the charges I was querying, they phoned me at work to discuss & agree the refund, sent out a form for me to sign and the refund was made 5 days later.
All in the whole thing only took 12 days to resolve. And no threats to close my account either, just a gentle reminder from a really nice member of staff about the dangers of going over my overdraft limit.
Only heard about this issue when a friend told me about an article she'd read about Govan Law Centre and the work they've been doing in Scotland about helping folks recover bank charges.
So give it a try. It works.0 -
I have filed a claim online (MCOL). Do they ask for any paperwork from me? And will i need to send any paperwork and all the statements i received or will an excel printout do?
