    I've been Money Tipped!
In 30 years I have never called her anything. I can't stand her (she has been really horrible to me). Have not seen her now for about 2 years, never speak to her on the phone anymore and never write in any cards to her.
The world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie
  • I call her by her name. not that close to her really so would feel inappropriate to call her 'mum'. see her about once a fortnight.

I get on very well with my in laws (we're just back from a weeks holiday together!) but I call them by their first names, it wouldn't feel right to call them mum or dad. Dh does the same with my mum.

However I still have 2 grandparents - my granny he calls by her first name but my granda he calls granda!

why would I call my mother in law 'mum'? She didnt give birth to me or raise me. She is my DH's mother and so her title is the mother in law, or her first name.

The last post made me laugh so much!:rotfl:
I'm really lucky mine is great,i call mine by her christian name but once she did apologise for accidentley putting Mum in a card to me (i thought it was sweet, as she has three lads & i'm a lass).
My father-in-law when telling a story about her to me says "your mum" but i'm never sure if it is a slip of the tongue.

I agree with some other posts it would feel strange calling her Mum so i never have but if she suggested it to me i would happily agree.

I think its a case of each to there own as my Brothers Fiancee has called my parents mummy(then her surname) & my dad 2 'pops' (when hes dad to us) from the beginning so its her jokey parent names for them & they don't mind.
My Parents always used to call each others parents Mum & Dad & i can remember thinking how strange but once you are in a long term relationship often they become as much as your parents as your own so i can see how it starts to feel right!.
What a great discussion it is so interesting hearing the different responses,& very amusing!ha!
