    House phone its 'dragon'

a friend of mine used to call her (now deceased) MIL 'Dragon' as did her children - never called her Nan or anything like that. However, it was a term of real endearment.

my own daughter sometimes calls me 'the old budge' to my face! which cracks me up.......I have no idea what I am called behind my back, will have to ask DS1 as he is the family 'snitch'.
er I think the dragon posts are funny as my username tandraig is a mis-spelled version of fire dragon in welsh! so, as you can guess I wouldnt mind in the least being refered to as the dragon!!! may get a bit upset if it was prefixed by 'the old' though! lol

"Call me Mum" she said. "Yes, Name" I replied :o. DH calls my mother by her name, so it is even.

The kids call her 'Granny-Place name' and, sadly, she hates that.

  • I love my Mil and fil to bits and sometimes I call her Mum and sometimes by her name, my fil I call dad because it feels comfortable. We stay at their house every weekend though and do get on really well.

I vary: it's Mum, Dad, Mother, Father, Grandma, Grandad or their names, depending on context, eg MIL will talk about consulting Father about something and vice versa. Cards go to and from Mum and Dad.

But I don't think DH knows what to call mine: it doesn't matter with my mother because she doesn't speak to him more than she can help, and my dad's dead now, but I can't remember ever hearing DH call him either Dad or his name.

I think it is harder for my generation (in 40's) to call older people by their christian names as we were bought up to call parents friends 'Auntie' or 'Uncle', and usually our mates parents were Mr or Mrs So and so.

I think, at least for me, this is true. We were strict military family growing up, and all other adults were Mr or Mrs ....

I don't call MIL anything specifically. I feel a bit presumptuous calling her Mum, even though she has said to go ahead and do so. I feel rude calling her by her first name (as obviously DH doesn't). So I stick mostly with "Nan" or "Nanny" as our children (her grandchildren) call her. Sadly FIL passed away last year before I could settle into calling him Dad either. I sometimes now wish I had gotten comfortable with that form of address, as now I can never do so.

My DIL calls me either by my first name, or "Gran" if referring to me with our grandson.

  • I don't call mine anything as I have not spoken to them for 2 years ,its great!!!
  • I'm another one who never knew what to call my ex MIL (Know what I would have liked to call her though!)
Nothing was ever suggested so I ended up calling her Mum when I needed to get her attention.

Both my SIL & DIL call me by my 1st name. My SIL has a mother but DIL's is dead & it would be wrong for her to call me Mum especially as she is only 12 years younger than me.
Told her to call her by my 1st name when I realised on meeting her when she had been with my son about six months he hadn't even told her what my name was. That's boys for you.
I always sign joint cards & ones to my DD & DS 'Mum' & individual cards such as birthday ones to SIL & DIL with my first name.
  • I get on with my MIL, but we don't see a great deal of each other.

When we do meet, I just do that awkward thing of not using her name! If I "have to", I'll use it, but I try to avoid situations whereby I'd have to call her across a crowded room, etc.

I've never called either of my MIL's by anything other than their first name, current OH's is usually referred to as 'Your Mother'. She once signed a card to me as 'Mum' and was soon put straight I'm afraid, if she had asked me, I'd have explained, but she just presumed and that annoyed me. My 'Mum' was my adoptive mother who died in 1989 - nobody could ever replace her.
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.
