That's why I'm reading it at the moment as well. And next on my list is Gone Girl for the same reason

I always prefer to read the book first if possible although I find it's not generally a good idea to see the movie too soon after reading the book as I spend too much time doing comparisons and the film has to be shorter than the book.

    :D

I read Gone Girl a while ago - it was pretty odd but good and twisty -
the sort of book I'm not sure I enjoyed! I now cant remember how it ended though so at least the film will have some surprises!
No more buying books Books in 2016 = 20.
    Target for 2018 = 7/21
No more buying DVDs ? 2018 target 27/52

I only recently had "read" (listened to) the book - I remembered that a lot of things in the story came very unexpected. We just watched the movie and I was pleasantly surprised, they did well.

I'm surprised they don't have a waiting list...here I can browse the district libraries stock on-line and put a request in. Once it's at my branch they email me to pick it up!

I've now finished Keigo Higashino "Salvation of a Saint". Very good, interesting characters (but not quite up to Stieg Larsson as the blurb on the book promises - no idea how they can compare them...). Have not decided what comes next!
I have counted the books in my bedroom - 16 ! 4 of them are work related, they are excused ;). I don't dare counting the shelves...

Totally agree - I was very pleasantly surprised at how well adapted it was.

So I'm not doing too well with the challenge this month - I received a freebie for a reading club - The Devil in the Marshalsea (seems very good so far and have read lots this week) so my collection has been added to! Must try harder!!

Hoping for lots more reading time now that autumn/winter is setting in - nothing better than curling up with a good book when the weather is dreary.

I've decided to finish Stephen Booth's "Dancing with the Virgins". A thriller btw, about a murder in a stone circle of said name, lol. Had started it in the summer holidays but something else more exciting came in between...

  • hi folks :coffee:

I haven't done all that brilliantly since I was last here in late September. firstly my MIL came round with a big bag of books she was throwing out, of which I kept 5:

The Other Hand by Chris Cleave
The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough (this will be a re-read from my teens)
The Secret Scripture by Barry Sebastian
Vinegar Nature's Secret Weapon by Maxwell Stein
Learn to Paint With Watercolours by Alwyn Crawshaw

I suppose you could consider these 'gifts' but it still doesn't help my shelves :( However the rest of them (around 10 or so) I did add to my donation bag which went to the Samaritans.

and then I was doing quite well as I have been so busy with audits and arranging a holiday that I hadn't visited any CS's.

then today I went into town to be 'de-Wookied' for my holiday (ouchies) when I thought i'd just pop in to see if they had any shorts that didn't make my backside look like a spacehopper. no luck. but I ended up finding 3 books from my wishlist and another couple for under a fiver:

    Flight Behaviour by Barbara Kingsolver
    Divergent by Veronica Roth
    Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson
The Shock of the Fall by Nathan Filer
The Education of Little Tree by Forrest Carter (a re-read)

reading-wise I have slowed down a little because of aforementioned busyness, but I did finish:

#53/60 Blackbird House by Alice Hoffman 5/5 - a really lovely little book of short stories about the same house through the years and through the lives and memories of those who lived there

    and I am halfway through:

The Shell Seekers by Rosamunde Pilcher (a cosy re-read)

i'm probably not going to finish it before I go away on Monday, and it's quite a thick book, so i'm currently trying to decide what to take with me to read that is a) not too chunky, but will last 2 weeks and b) not too heavy in the literary sense because, hey, i'll be half-cut on cocktails most of the time
    happy reading guys!

    Afternoon All,

Just finished Nine Tailors by Dorothy L Sayers for our Bookclub, found it a light quick read, and I did really enjoy the weaving of the plot lines. Not as good as Mrs Christie but well written.

Now picked up Mary Berrys Autobiography for a bit of a change

Hello all, have just finished - john Grisham - Sycamore Row- I really enjoyed it. It was about a last will and testament that a man wrote before he hung himself. He cut his family out and gave most of it to his housekeeper.
I am looking forward to his next book that comes out at the end of this month. Hopefully Father Christmas will give it to me for Christmas.
