whoa...i haven't been here in, like, a year? i've been active on GoodReads, but had the sudden urge to update here too.

    so, hi again :)

anyhoo. you can see by my signature that i still have a loooong journey ahead of me with regards to my TBR pile. do i have the record? :rotfl: yikes. it's a bit of a wake-up call when you notice that one of the books you've just read has been sitting, rent-free, on your shelves since June 2003. yep, 11 years i've dragged that book from home to home without reading it. it's a sickness, i tell ya.

still, i am doing well with my GoodReads challenge - i'm currently reading Angela Carter's 'Fireworks', which is #46 of my 60 goal for 2014. i'm also trying to avoid CS's for the most part, and do better at freeing read books into the outside world, however the Gods of Literature seem determined to scupper me.

example: my folks visited me over the bank holiday weekend and stayed at a campsite with a small shed library, where you can donate and buy books. great, i said. i have a pile waiting to go to charity in my dining room, i said. i'll bring them over when i pick you up...i said.

so i load up the bag of 9 books and tootle over there...only to pick up 6 books for £2.

in my defence (if there is one) they were the first 5 in the Shardlake series that i'd been after for myself and DH (i've read the first but want to reread it), and 'Winter Solstice' by Rosamunde Pilcher, which i thought would be a nice, light autumn read. but hey, we can justify 'til our heads fall off, am i right?

    so that's my confession.

in truth, i'd like to read more than i've acquired this year (so only 30 to go!), and i'd also like to beat my highest logged annual total (70 books read in 2005...although i'm sure i read more when i was younger, but i wasn't logging it back then). having said that, i'm trying to spend more time in my art studio as well, so it might be a fruitless quest. we'll see. _pale_

    Welcome, Island.girl!
To get started with the good intentions, could you maybe aim not to buy any before you have read and passed on one? Charity shops are a real temptation!
Let us know what you chose to read and if you liked it ;) Looking forward to hearing more!

  • I'm hoping not to buy any books till I've read all the ones I have... Fingers crossed.
I've just finished reading gone girl which was a really good book full of twists and suspense I would recommend it if you can get it from the library. I'm just about to start sharp objects by the same author Gillian Flynn.

i finished the Angela Carter collection last night, and whilst it isn't my favourite of hers, i'll be keeping it in my AC collection for a possible reread later. there were a few stories i liked.

i've now picked up Sarah Shun-Lien Bynum's 'Madeleine is Sleeping' (which i've owned since 2007!)

I'm a HUGE Jo Nesbo fan (and any scandi lit really). I've met him a couple of times and he's absolutely lovely, very sarcastic, there's a lot of him in Harry Hole.

Have started listing some books on Amazon and have actually sold 1 already! Those that I won't make money from, I'll try and trade in with them, then they'll be offered to the book club girls and after that I'll take them to the CS (and try not to bring any new one's home with me!)

  • I finished 'I Am Pilgrim' by Terry Hayes at the weekend, which was brilliant. One of the best written books I've read for ages. It pieced together the story really well and made me want to keep reading. It was a library book so isn't helping reduce my tbr pile but at least it also means I didn't buy it!
I am now starting Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy, which I bought on Kindle ages ago but haven't got around to reading yet

    Hi everyone,
Succumbed and bought a book - The Shack - for 10p.
Borrowed it off a friend a few years ago and read it. Cried through it. Want to read parts of it again.

    Mrs Moneypenny- phillipa Gregory titles:
The constant princess, the white queen, the red queen. I souls also have the other Boleyn girl somewhere!!!!
Is there an order that I should read her books in?

33 unread books plus 11 that my husband received.

oh, I succumbed as well...because DD2 needed some books for school and I needed to make up the £ 10. So I bought 1 for work and 1 book I had read years ago and want to read again. Then I can give it to DD2 who loves everything Japanese. An incredibly gripping thriller "Out" by Natsuo Kirino (£2.31).
I just finished "The devotion of suspect X" which was good but not a "Japanese Stieg Larsson" as the blurb on the book had promised..."Out" was much, much better.
