Happygreen wrote: »Hi Jellie! To answer your question, I don't think listing unreads would help me as it's just too many! I think I was a shopaholic for books when the kids were little and I'm still catching up from what I bought then (mind, the oldest DD is leaving home next month! ) or later when it was hard to resist out of habit...I had won £ 200 worth of books at a book club in 2000 (I think) and I had to spend that credit withing a few months...Then I started a NY-resolution not to buy any more book and the piles still keep growing as people give me books, so I have to learn to say "No" which is really hard. Still, the resolution, going now for year 4, has helped the most. I am saying to myself when tempted "Just STOP here". Last one I bought was a cookery book I am actually using, so no harm done ....and before it was a couple of work-related reference books.
Anyway - good luck with reducing your pile! It's such a lovely thread.:T
Thanks- it is really useful to know what strategies people use to succeed on here. I find it difficult to switch my mindset that spending on books is justified and somehow doesn't count!Bubblesmum wrote: »Waving
I have had for a very long time a large excel spreadsheet with the majority of my books recorded. As I have severe trouble often choosing what to read next, then consequently buying one. I started reading by alphabetical order of authors first names:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:.mu husband thinks I am mad!
I do often have several on the go.... Biography, history, and a novel etc so I don get stuck on one author or genre :T
It does give me great satisfaction when I mark them as read, and now that I am trying to declutter (exchanging a book case for a wood burner !!!!) I am listing them on GreenMetropolis or taking to charity shops. Unless a real favourite which I keep, although having said that I am treating myself to the occasional Kindle replacement of those I read time and time again.
From this thread I have discovered Good Reads and am transferring my excel spreadsheet to there... Even more fun is the yearly challenge. I am one away from half way of the yearly challenge :T;)
So I would say go for it......
I've just joined Goodreads and it struck me this would be a good place to document my to read section. I'm looking forward to being able to do my first yearly challenge.
When I saw your comment on exchanging a book case for a wood burner I had a mental picture of you burning the books and bookcase :D2019 fashion on a ration 0/66 coupons0 -
Morning,
I have had for a very long time a large excel spreadsheet with the majority of my books recorded. As I have severe trouble often choosing what to read next, then consequently buying one. I started reading by alphabetical order of authors first names - WOW -bubblesmum that is an impressive 'to read' list if you need a spread sheet!
Finished Jessi-cat last night- just going to do a spot of cleaningbefore going to pick the next read from my stash
Stash now at 24 paper books & 7 e books.
Happy reading MerryMortgage free wannabe #580 -

Just finished the secret life of Bletchley Park by Sinclair McKay
Will give it :T:T:T:T:T it was excellent.
This book just flowed with the story of Bletchley Park during the war. Well written and thought out, the story, mixed biography, social commentary, war and the achievements both human and scientific of the code breakers during WW2.
It left with me great pride in all those who worked there, with sadness that it took so long to recognise their achievements.
With a smile on my face thinking of Merrylegs instead of picking the next one in alphabetical order. I closed my eyes and picked -
medieval women - a social history of women in England 450 - 1500 by Henrietta Leyser
However, am also pleased to say I have a Barbara Taylor Bradford on the go for light relief :rotfl:As a dear MSE friend says “keep plodding” or

Moved house on Monday. On Tuesday had all my stuff come out of storage after two years. Husband is complaining about the amount of books I have - I have gone through them and given another box of books to my mum to distribute to people she knows. Had a nice surprise and found that I already had two Phillipa Greogory books that I wanted!!! Have a lovely pile of unread books to read. When we went for a walk in town kept away from the book stalls and charity shops. I've decided that I'm going to read some of the books that I read twenty to twenty-five years ago again!!!!2025 Fashion on a ration 0/66 coupons

Merry - I love most books, fiction ranges from chick lit, classics, detectives, Tudor history and the odd new writer that I have heard about or is a book club choice.
Non fiction, - biography/autobiography; history mostly English Civil war, Tudors, Social history from the industrial revolution onwards, particularly, Edwardian Era, WW1 and twenties and thirties, the era of my great grandparents and grandparents. Christian books, and mental health ( I'm a mental health occupational therapist). The odd Art book !
I rarely buy books full price and acquire through charity shops and as presents.
Now to my NMBB Friends I have a confession, Friend and I went into a charity bookshop for a recipe book, I spotted two books by my favourite authors ( C J Sansom and Alison Weir) Friend raised her eyebrows as she knows my ban and took it off me.... But paid for it for my upcoming birthday..then took it away so I couldn't read it :rotfl:.. And then the next day I took OH in and he bought the other..... For said upcoming event. They are both out of my reach..., but am looking forward to next month :rotfl::rotfl:
