Finished The Woman who went to bed for a year today, Sue Townsend. I was reading it until silly o'clock this morning, but eventually had to give in and sleep. I had wanted to read it for ages and came across it in Oxfam shop the morning after hearing of Sue Townsend's death!
Not sure about a year, but a week in bed rather appeals:D
I could see some of myself in that lady who went to bedS.T. was a great and funny writer, that she died is very sad. I love her books about the Royal Family. I now have put the Adrian Mole series on the library request list, amreally looking forward to them.

went to the carboot on sunday and a book leapt out at me so i had to buy it (it was only 50p) michael morpurgo "Alone on a wide wide sea" im already on page 162 its about the children who were taken to australia and settled there. the boy the stroy is following was an orphan who was told he was going to be adopted by a lovely family and get a perfect new life but is taken to a working family run by a really strict religious man who forces the boys to work the family and beats any who dont work hard enough, he escapes from there and after Aborigines find him and take him to a lady who collects and cares for injured animals that she returns to the wild once they are strong enough, his life and the life of the friend with him start to improve.
i love michael morpurgos style of writing i buy his books for my son and end up reading them myself.SPC~12 ot 124

I'm almost finished with "Broken Soup" and I highly recommend it for the young teen. A teenager and her family coming to terms with bereavement without being in the slightest patronising. Gladly hand it over to the school for their library.First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, and then you win - Gandhi0

Hi All,
I bought a book!!!!!!!!!!
First one this year, oh no!
It was Liz Kershaw's autobiog, 'The Bird and The Beeb' and I really enjoyed it. I flicked through it in the bookshop and kept returning again and again! In the end just bought it - sig and lists updated accordingly!
Anyway it was a great book, a big expose on the brilliant side of the Beeb and also it's downsides - eg the endemic sexism there and of course all the recent terrible scandals.
I've still got approx. 1/3 of the Robert Peston book to read but this has been a great diversion from the world of complicated finance!2014 Frugal Living Challenge

Number of new books bought in 2014: 1

I have just started to read Rosamunde Pilcher's Snow in April. No idea how long it was lurking as last time I read one of hers was about 30 years ago when I was still a romantic little girl...time it leaves this house I think!First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, and then you win - Gandhi0

i wold say you wont be disappointed by any of his books. private peaceful should be read by everyone, it was done by my sons school as a play a few years ago and i can honestly say there was not a dry eye in the hall, its about the futility of war and a young lad who questions the sense in it all.
kensuki's kingdom was about a young boy washed up on an island when he falls off his parents yatch, the island is inhabited by a group of orangutans a japanese pilot who doesnt know the war has ended and has been hiding on the island caring for the apes - beautifully written
when the whales came is such a beautiful book that made me cry, its based on an island off scotland and tells the legend of the narwhales.
most of his books have an animal as the main character, there are lots on my sons shelf ive not yet read that are on my tbr list but i make myself read a few of mine in between them as i know they are all keepers.
enjoying sea glass at the mo, its not a happy book its based in america at the start of the depression and the mill strikes in a new england townSPC~12 ot 124

You've just convinced me to take a book out of my CS bag lol. I picked this book up ages ago in a charity shop and have never got round to reading it so put it back in this week. I've only read one of Michael Morpurgo - which was Aldophus Tips - and I loved that one!
