  • ooo just found this thread thanks to a link on no buy toiletries . main weaknesses are oxfam and the bookpeople.com.im thinking a target of reading 20 books before i buy anymore seems possible-currently reading "not buying it-judith levine" and "ghost town" which is book 9 in a series-thought it was the last one but another one coming out later this year :P

I'm here to confess - I bought three books at Water$stones BUT I had vouchers so no actual spend;)
    I got -
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks - Rebecca Skloot
    Sister - Rosamund Lupton
    The Postmistress - Sarah Blake

However - in A$da today they had a load of books at £1
so I paid REAL MONEY for-
The Queens Fool & The Virgins Lover by Philippa Gregory. These are a change from my usual reading choices, but I know they get good reviews and I've always fancied reading her books. At that price I couldnt resist:o

  • i have a load of books but no time to read them. i buy most of my books from boot sales, when they are virtually brand new for 50 p/£1.00. my mam is an avid reader so i pick them up for her and tell her to keep them for me!! i have just bought approx 75 books on ebay for 5.99 which were collected locally. my daughter gave her dad about 6 of these for xmas as they were jeremy clarksons and looked brand new. a load of them were hard back and i could not resist the bargain.

i have a stash of magazines to read that i get off my mam and a friend of work.

the problem is i just dont have time to read them but if someone donates them then im not buying them!
    Just about to give up!

Hey Elfen - saw your reply to my post on the NSD thread but I thought I'd reply here!

Got The Queens Fool & The Virgins Lover by Philippa Gregory. They look good.
I must start on my book pile - it's getting ridiculous!

  • Made a start on The Deceleration last night. I like it so far, about 100 pages in nothing major has happened yet though. Planning on finishing it tonight, then hopefully start the second one and get that finished by the end of the week.

Uni starts back next week, so i've been trying to cross as much of my list as possible before then!

Uh.. so... if you and your other half don't buy each other anything for Christmas but set aside some money to spend in the sales AFTER Christmas and THAT money has been used by me to buy books... that's okay right? RIGHT? * cough *

I've used some of that money and also I got some tokens for Christmas so have used those too - again, no actual "spend" as it was presents. Will pop back and say what I got, which is... a LOT!

Also, "Not Buying It" is a REALLY good read I thought, made me really stop and think about things. Only thing I had a problem with was when they went to other people's houses for meals and stuff, the dilemma about taking anything. But ideas about MAKING presents rather than buying them and them being better received made perfect sense. Gosh I hope we're talking about the same "Not Buying It" here or this will seem like NONSENSE!

And I NEVER talk nonsense. Nope goldfish deodorant housewares.

Forgive me, bretheren, for I have sinned. :(

I purchased two books: Les Liasons Dangereuses (I have wanted to read this FOREVER!) and York Notes on Romeo & Juliette. The first was an impulse purchase after stupidly allowing myself to wander into an Oxfam in a studenty part of town, and the second was a gift from the same establishment for my brother's girlfriend who is resitting her GCSE English and is finding it a bit difficult.

I promise that I will not sin again...but please stop recommending books as I am now reserving 'Not Buying It' from the library! :o
