I've just written a fairly stinging email using the "contact us" part of the Santander website. I was really proud of it, then pressed the submit button only to get the message that the website was down.0

same as me dogtanian, its frustrating
im not going to waste more of my hard earned money filling the big wigs at santander just to complain to them about how rubbish their service is...
was never like this two years ago... santander had always been reliable up until sept this year for me....0 -
I opened a Nationwide Flexaccount a couple of months ago with the intention of only using it when travelling becasue they do not charge for ATM withdrawals abroad. After this weekend I am seriously thinking of making this my main account.0

The story has made the news on the BBC website. Sorry, but as a new user I cannot post the link, so here's the text.
A power cut knocked out cash machine and online services for customers with Santander bank on Sunday.
The power failed at 1100 GMT following internal testing affected more than 2,000 cashpoints for Britain's third largest retail bank.
Customers were still able to use their cards to pay for products at tills and were able to get cash-back.
A spokesman for Santander said: "We now have power and are in the process of restoring services."
No customers could take out cash or use their internet banking service.
Alliance & Leicester, which is owned by Santander was unaffected.
Santander customers can withdraw cash from other banks' ATMs and the company expects to get all things back to normal by the end of Sunday.
"We apologise for the inconvenience caused to customers," the spokesman added.
Customers able to use their cards at tills! I think a few of us may dispute that claim!0 -

Blimey, all their systems must pass through a single point at some stage, so if that single point should fail, everything fails . I can't believe they operate like this, apparently with no parallel contingency or UPS. The Bank of England is very hot on all banks being able to underpin their systems with robust contingency plans which are tested regularly. I foresee their CEO being summoned to speak to the Bank of England Governor tomorrow.
