Their online banking system is still down so couldn't pay the bills I wanted. So paid by debit card on Mint website - used my santander debit card, went through okay. so yeh, no probs with Visa, just santander system has crashed. Agree, they should have put some kinda notice on their website to save us all wasting our time fretting .0

That's rubbish.
If Visa had crashed, then no one with a Visa card (i.e. the customers of nearly every bank) would be able to use it.
The truthful answer would have been to say that Santander have crashed.
That will be the real reason, no doubt a road repair in Madrid will get the blame if it is like the last time it happened.;)0 -
This problem is still ongoing. I drove 60 miles this morning to buy something only to find that my card was declined. Responding to a previous comment - this is not a VISA problem. I managed to eventually get through to Sad-tander and they told me that their entire system was down and nobody could use their debit cards.
Not the first time this has happened to them.
I am going to ask them to refund my petrol money.
I will let you know how I get on which, I suspect, will not be too well.0 -
This happened to me on Hogmanay, thought i wasn't getting any money and i was stranded arghh. Eventually got it though. I am thinking of moving to Barclays anyway0

So glad I found these posts, was in reading this morning and had a transaction declined, thought it was just me to begin with but then tried 3 cashpoints and all said contact card issuer. Then found Abbey cashpoints both down, just read 'sorry for the inconvenience'. Fianlly tried the internet and when that wasnt working gathered that something was up.
There are going to be some RED RED faces at Santander tommorow, glad i dont work there, can you imagine the grief staff will get tomorrow!0 -
I had same problem this morning in Sainsburys had 31pounds worth shopping and told card declined, glad i had cash. Wish Santender put something on website as cant get through on phone or on internet.....0

I have had the same problem today. Went to mozza's (morrisons) to get my sickly wife (bless, she is like the kid off the exorcist with the head spinning round with green stuff coming out of her nose) some scones??? and my mum a pressie for her b'day on tuesday, only to get the card declined. They kindly brought out the oldy worldy card thing with the carbon paper for me to use. Trouble was the card is my wifes and i could not have signed it. The name, bunch of muppetts springs to mind when i think of santander. abbey were just as bad seeing as i took my cards and cheque book down to the branch about a year ago to close my account to be told that due to a error they could not do it as there were funds that needed to be cleared even though they agreed a figure for me to pay to clear the balance. I am still getting statements for that account that up to a few months ago were showing that i owed them money due to DD's not getting cancelled and getting returned due to nill funds. I am now in credit by about four pounds. Never again will i use abbey or santander.

Same problem here too. Rang Santander (30 minutes wait....) and was told their whole system is down (on-line, cash machines, cards). 'The IT Dept are working on it'! Asked about compensation as we now have no food or petrol. Was told to go into my local branch tomorrow (assuming their systems are back up and running). I think everyone effected should complain and ask for compensation. They have all our money and we can't get at it!!!0
