Problems with Abbey (Santander) debit cards this weekend?

Options
Has anyone else been haing problems with their Abbey debit cards. I have two Abbey current accounts and the cards for both have been declined at shops and ATMs this weekend. In the queue at the ATM at Tesco's today there were 3 other people who's Abbey cards had been declined, including one distraught woman who had been unable to pay for her shopping.
The checkout assistant told me that they have had a lot of trouble today with Abbey cards. I tried phoning Abbey but cannot get through. Sounds like they are having big problems.

Time to change banks I think.

  • Just used my debit card in local co op but after waiting ages to log in to my account getting an error message. Must be problem with their systems...nuisance though. I was only saying yesterday how I hadn't had any trouble with them at all so far. Hope I don't live to eat my words!

Glad I found this thread, I was worrying a bit as my Abbey card was declined twice for £7 of shopping, I had aover a 100 times this amount in my account on Friday and I was worried that something untoward had happened, tried 3 different link machines after it was declined and they all said they were unable to contact card supplier

  • Was just about to post about this anyway....having my card declined earlier, couldn't get any cash out....rang santander, waited 30 mins for reply, apparently visa have crashed!!! they are not allowing any santander customer to make transactions at present..advisor just said they are working on it....but its causing some commotion their end!!!

Hopefully visa will get it sorted, but very embarrasing for customers, not to say how much trouble it will cause today for sunday shoppers everywhere.

  • Me too. Just went to get the shopping in with the family and while my wife left the Somerfield with the shopping I was having my card declined. Had to bring the shopping back as had no other source of payment. Checked local Santander ATM to no avail, Checked online and nothing and after 20 mins on hold I gave up with telephone banking.

You would think they would post something on their home page to stop people worrying that their card hasn't been skimmed.

Glad I founf this thread too.

    That's rubbish.

If Visa had crashed, then no one with a Visa card (i.e. the customers of nearly every bank) would be able to use it.

The truthful answer would have been to say that Santander have crashed.
