I was able to use my santander card at a till when all this was going on..my fiance on the other hand couldnt access his account at all

Probably meant that the amount you were spending was less than the amount which triggers "must get authorisation". Santander won't tell us what that amount is, but it is supposed to exist.
  • You lot could have stolen the food instead and then used the debit card wont work excuse that you were starving and facing certain death.

How can sunday be the only day you can go shopping? Are you locked up 24 hours a day for the other six days of the week?? Working in a supermarket i hear the same story every sunday from the braindead sunday shoppers "it's the only chance i get all week", rubbish! Stay home, cook a nice sunday lunch and spend some quality time with your family, something i'd love to do every sunday. And to all those using the excuse that bank accounts are hard to get, TWADDLE! Basic accounts are two a penny (just don't get one with Santander).
I was (if you had bothered to read the posts before spouting off) trying to buy my mother a birthday pressie. If i could have looked into the future and seen this would have happened i wouls be a very( putting the lotto on) rich and lucky man.
No. bank accounts are not easy to get. Yes i have a co-op one. But it is a VERY BASIC one that means you can only use a cash card. And i did not have any spare cash in it.
  • You had a year to get the present and Morries is hardly the most chic of places to be getting a birthday present from really, is it? Anyhow, get yourself off to another bank, NatWest step account is a doddle to open and provides more than adequat facilities.

Although Natwest is undoubtedly a step up from Santander/A&L, why not go for a bank with decent customer service?

Try the Halifax Easycash account, or Barclays' basic account. These will both give you debit cards.

She wanted a bottle of whiskey and it was a good price.

Is there anywhere else, where one can get that much mileage out of so little?

I would say, it was well worth it!!!
  • Heh, whiskey eh? Fair play to her, tell her happy birthday from me.
