  • So you have no corner shops either do you? No Spar, Tesco Local, Londis, NISA, CO-OP, Day and Nite, no other shops in the world near where you live????
  • If you would have read my post i was getting something for my mothers birthday.
  • And how would i have paid for this? Brass naffin buttons?
  • Please read my previous postings, i had food but i had to pick up a few groceries, such as saffron and vegetables, cant expect to eat stale vegetables! geee... I prefer healthy living, except for the cravings of chocolate!!! hmmmmmmmm....

Some people on the other hand, do their shopping every day such as little old ladies... its their joy of getting out of the house.

Where i live supermarkers shut at 4pm; unable to drive because of my pregnancy (i am huge) i find that i am unable to go alot further afield.

I feel it is wrong to judge people. Every person is different, but not all of us believe in having several different bank accounts, or even feel the need to.

It was my experience of abbey in the 90,s that made me open a basic account with £100 in it for when they messed up with my wages etc
Thankfully no longer a customer of abbey, but a spare basic account with some cash in it has came in very handy many times since them.
I have a deep burning indifference
  • Right, I've actually registered so I can say something about this.

I work for one of the big companies. I'm obvs not going to say which one, but I've spoken to a lot of people who seem to have no sense at all. I thought these were people who had no access to the real world.

For all the people moaning here, do you seriously not have a spare current account? I mean, seriously?! Because I was under the impression only the most clueless, the most backward and the most imbecilic of the creatures on this earth didn't have the common sense to have a spare account in case things like this go wrong. Technology goes wrong. It always has, and always will. Don't entirely rely on the system just because it works close to 100% of the time.

You don't have a credit card? You don't carry enough cash to cover yourself? Hahaha!

One of the stories we get time and time and time again is someone on the other side of the world who has lost their card / had stolen their card / has discovered their card is damaged, or the card has simply stopped working (which is allowed to happen - it's not illegal remember) and have no other means of money, and are completely screwed. Again - hahaha! What utter cretins for not having the brains to have a backup. At least they won't make that mistake again.

And now you won't. Count yourself lucky that it happened when you were trying to buy some bread, and not when you were trying to buy yourself a plane ticket home from Asia. Because, and trust me on this, your current woes trying to tell Santander there's a problem (when it was utterly and painfully clear that there was, and you obviously should have saved your pennies - was it worth it to get the answer of 'yes there's a error' having waited a half hour?) will seem utter piffle to being stuck in a country on the other side of the globe on your own, because all your mates were able to get home safely.

Chill out, get a grip if you're considering compensation and give £20 to Haiti instead, and then GET A SPARE CURRENT ACCOUNT. As if it wasn't clear in the first place...

Try not to stab yourself in the eye with the pen when you're writing a compensation demand. They're quite sharp at the end.

and PS. I HAVE BAKED WITH ABBEY FOR 20 YEARS! THEY WERE A BUILDING SOCIETY, so get YOUR FACTS RIGHT.

You have BAKED with the Abbey for twenty years, well I hope that their ovens are better than their banking systems.:bdaycake:

Anyone who has not been living in a cave knows that they were once a building society. Are we meant to be impressed with this history lesson? The fact is that the Abbey/Santander is not a bank it is a problem.

You said that you do not want to be with money grabbing banks such as Barclays, well I hate to break it to you that ALL financial institutions are money grabbers it is just that some afford their customers a decent service. Maybe you thought that the Abbey was there for your benefit. Do not kid yourself.

Just because someone has a credit card does not mean that they are debt ridden. If used properly credit cards are an invaluable financial tool. You have really not got a clue. Finally if I had been with the Abbey come Santander for twenty years I would not be willing to admit it. All the best.

  • I've returned to this thread after a day and I can't believe that it has turned into an attack by a couple of posters against the people who have been the victims of Santander's incompetance. Perhaps your time and vitriol would be better spent against Santander to ensure that this does not happen again.

And as for some of the useful suggestions. A "bit" of spare cash isn't going to pay for a trolley full of shopping when Sunday is the only day that you can get to the supermarket. And for some poeple it is difficult enough to get one current account let alone a "spare" or a credit card.

And to monkeybiscuits, I sure that Sunday's problem also affected many people who were abroad and did not know what was happening with their accounts. As you have obvoiusly been through this perhaps a little empathy is in order.

I would like to think we have all learned something from what happened this weekend.

Let's just consider this thread closed shall we.

    Victims.......??????

Nobody died, lost an arm, gone blown up or burried alive!

I struggle to see how you were all victims to the mercinary that is Santander.

How can sunday be the only day you can go shopping? Are you locked up 24 hours a day for the other six days of the week?? Working in a supermarket i hear the same story every sunday from the braindead sunday shoppers "it's the only chance i get all week", rubbish! Stay home, cook a nice sunday lunch and spend some quality time with your family, something i'd love to do every sunday. And to all those using the excuse that bank accounts are hard to get, TWADDLE! Basic accounts are two a penny (just don't get one with Santander).
