Im considering part ex my current car which is a 206 for a new one, ive been looking at the Seat 5 door SE, the Hyundai i20, the Peugeot 207, the Corsa and the Golf. Id thought of buying a year old car but the cars ive looked at for a little more you can get a brand new 1. I understand when buying a new car you lose value in depreciation so with a year old car has it already lost the value ? basically what are the benefits to buying 1 a year old over a brand new 1. Are Golfs a good car ?

can't really comment on the cars you mention as don't have any experiance of but I would recommend it may be worth looking doing a search on internet for companies that buy new cars in bulk and then are able to sell at discount. Benefit is you save some of the loss on depreciation as soon as car leaves show room. Negative is to offer low prices they often register car in their name so you would not be first registered keeper. Eg I bought a brand new car priced at £13k best deal local showroom, for £8k.
I would say you loose the biggest amount in the first year but hefty depreciation for first three years on most cars.
Sorry if your research already includes these searches!!

When you compare depreciation you have to be realistic and compare the price you pay for the cars and not list prices. All the car mags harp on about the savage depreciation of certain cars without bothering to mention the transaction value.

Golfs are overpriced for what they are. You get much more for your money with a Skoda Octavia (based on the Golf platform, sharing the engines and many of the same parts) and they're one of the best looking Skoda cars available at the moment IMO (the new Fabia, Roomster, and Yeti are all a bit iffy looking). I can't remember how long it is since the Octavia facelift model came out, but I wonder if there's any pre-registered of the pre-facelift dealers are wanting to get rid of.

That said Golfs do hold their value better. So if you want to sell up in a couple of years that might be the one to go for.

you can say that again about the looks.

but i think the skoda versus golf would be relative, the octavia still holds its value well, especially later on in its life.

Seat 5 door SE???? which one? ibiza? leon? Seats are basically cheap volkswagens (similar to skodas) so the ibiza is the polo's brother, same with the golf and the leon.

Peugeot 207 is essentially the new 206. just bigger, bit flashier, but not great to drive.

Hyundai i20, i have no knowledge of, sorry :(

The corsa was brilliant, but now is lagging at the bottom of the supermini group because everyone else has brought out new models relatively recently -polo, punto, ibiza, fiesta etc

The cars you're considering vary quite alot in terms of size, style and performance. There is a big difference between a Golf and a Corsa.

The Golf is a great car, but it's very expensive for what you actually get. If you want a Golf sized "family hatch" then I'd recommend you look at the Seat Leon (Golf in Seat clothing), or even the old shape Vauxhall Astra, with the new shape literally just out, you can get massive discounts on 59 plate delivery mileage cars in the old style.

If your looking more at the i20/Corsa/207 i'd give up on all three and pick either a fiesta or polo. Polo comes with more kit for less £s but the fiesta is supposedly the better drive. Personally i'd take the Polo!

The advantage to buying 1yr old cars is you buy the car for a lot less than list price, thus missing out on the massive initial depreciation some cars have.
But you're the second owner, it might only have a couple of thousand miles, but you don't know if they were put on by a little old lady popping to the shops, or by a 17 yr old doing donuts in a car park.
And with the wonderful invention of online brokers like broadspeed and drivethedeal there really is no need to buy anything but brand spanking new (or pre-reg with delivery mileage only for an even bigger discount) as they can offer the same discounts on cars made to order!

I was in the market for a new car in November. I had my eye on:

    Vauxhall Astra
    Seat Leon / Ibiza
    Fiat Punto
    Ford Fiesta

I ended up buying the Fiesta, and what a great choice that was!! I got my new Fiesta Titanium, 5dr Metallic paint with bluetooth voice control for 12k. The list price was 15k, and pre registered ones were coming in around 11.5k at the time of purchase.

It handles well, drives superb and you get hardly any road noise. Also comes with a hell of a lot of gadgets like Electronic Automatic Air Con, Voice Control, Bluetooth, USB & Aux, Electric folding mirrors when doors lock, Automatic headlights and window wipers, alloys, capless re-fueling, I could go on....

So you keep telling us, 12k for a ( Ford ) shopping trolley is outrageous, however you dress it up.

Just out of interest, what do you drive? What car would you recommend?

None of your business, it isn't an overpriced Ford Fiesta.

    If I was going to waste my money on a new car, which I am not, I would be looking at;

Kia C'eed, Hyundai i20 + i30, Honda Civic, Skoda Octavia and a few other good value cars.
