I sent the template letter from this site on behalf of my mum to Barclaycard! She received a letter and cheque yesterday for £1050 back in bank charges and interest! She has now paid off this credit card and has £500 for herself! Thanks again all at this site! :j0

Looking for some advice please!
I will be sending a letter to my bank trying to reclaim bank charges, however can someone please clarify something for me.
Is it only the 'charges as notified' I can reclaim or can I chance it and add on charges for arranged & unarranged overdrafts??
My bank is the Halifax (Bank of Scotland). My 'charges as notifed' are £406 but my overdrafts fees are £242!!!! Arghhh!!
Can someone please confirm what charges above I can or cannot reclaim?
Thanks!:)0 -

Where did you find email or a address of a CEO of a Lloyds TSB???
I have just made a claim with LLoyds and i sent them a letter which i never got a reply from for weeks, so i called them and it was dealt with over the phone within 48hrs and i got a payment the next day.
I wish i had known this and i would have saved myself the time waiting on that letter. worth a go.0 -
Thankyou Bee Sting for mentioning the email route. I think I will try this as it seems faster than waiting for an exchange of letters. My son is a student but deteriorating mental health has meant he's had to suspend his studies and live on SDA. He immediately got into a debt spiral with the bank charging him 162 GBP in the last 4 months on an income of just 1056 GBP.
Can I ask, please, did you use the template text just like a letter? And did you list the bank charges as it says?
Sorry, for the delay in answering your post.
Yes I used the template and listed the bank charges. I used the Halifax complaints form on their website which has a limit on the number of characters you can use, so I had to trim the template quite a bit.
If you have alot of detail in your complaint you would be better off writing a letter unless you know the email address for the complaints department.
Good luck with your claim and best wishes to your son.0 -
I would just like to say a BIG BIG thank you to this site. Two weeks ago I decided to contact my bank to try and reclaim my bank charges from the last six years. They were very quick in sending the statements back and I was even quicker sending back my letter of claim. I used the template for the hardship route and explained to the bank my situation. I was trying to claim back £4000.00. To my amazement I recieved a letter today from Llyods TSB saying that they are going to repay me the FULL amount
. Again I am soo thankful to MSE.

Interestingly for those of you who are Santander customers, i did a bit of investigating the other day as i was at the end of my tether. As previously stated, in April 2010 of last year i was charged over £375 pound in one month (two days!) for paid/unpaid fees. I found in Santander/A+L terms and conditions the other day that they are only allowed to charge a MAXIMUM of £150 in any calendar month...See Below
Is there a limit on Overdraft fees?
Daily Arranged Overdraft Fees and Daily Unarranged Overdraft Fees both have monthly caps on the number of fees which will be taken from your account. These caps will vary depending on the type of account you hold. We also limit the value of Unarranged Overdraft Fees (Daily Fees and Paid and Unpaid Fees) which we can take in a single monthly statement period. This limit is set to £150.
So as they poo-pood my claim for bank charges and basically told me to stuff it, i wrote to them yesterday to point out that in their Terms and Conditions they are capped at a maximum of £150 in any calendar month and that i want the overpayment of at least £225 refunded to me today.
Anyone think ive got a chance in getting it back? or do you think they will find some nifty way to talk their way out of this one as well??
Also, the first reply i received from Santander they told me that all charges up until 26/12/2011 will be revoked... the second letter i received they stated they would be charging me for all charges i knocked up. Can they go back on their word like that??
In need of help...badly xClose to the edge - close to giving up!!
I HATE SANTANDER!!0 -
Bank: Santander
Reclaim amount £460.00
Amount received: £140.00...... so far......
Hello,
Just thought I would share my partial success, we have a joint account with santander for household bills and shopping. We unknowingly went overdrawn about four months ago and have since racked up £460 in unauthorised overdraft fees and paid item fees. I wrote them them claiming hardship yesterday and emailed a copy of my letter to the complaints dept yesterday, today I received an email at 16.45 saying they were passing it on to the relevent dept and at some later point we have had £140 of charges that were taken out earlier today, refunded onto the account.
For info, I used the template letter on here and my hardship claim was tha we had an unexpected large bill which caused our initial hardship and their snowballing charges are compounding our hardship, to the point that we are going further into overdrafts on another account to make sure there is enough money in the Santander account to cover the charges.
I haven't had any further correspondence from them confirming whether or not this is all we will get refunded but I shall keep you posted. I just wanted to post my success on here for all the doubting thomas's, that it is still possible to get bank charges refunded if only partially and it's certainly worth sending a letter or an email....... nothing ventured, nothing gained!! :-D0 -
Has anyone had any success in claiming back bank charges from HSBC?
I see on here people seem to have success alot with santander and lloyds, and relatively quickly, but there hardly seems to be any about HSBC.
I have just started the process and have requested a list of my transactions. It says in the template they have 40 days to respond, does anyone know if they acknowledge receipt of the actual request or not? I would hate to wait 40 days only for them to say they never got it and have to start again.0 -
Hi all can anyone give me some advice. I have a Barclays additions account with overdraft and have just received a letter saying they are charging me £22.00 for going over my overdraft limit. I have checked my account and it was all ok until they placed the interest charge on which took me over the limit. Can they do this or can I give them some grief over the phone?0

I put in a claim to RBS for all the bank charges from the past 2.5 years. Instead of the money back, they have asked me to fill out a template of financial statement, which they will then review to determine if we are indeed in financial hardship, and then they will review how they 'can help' which would be things like moving our account to a type with no lending facilities, cancelling cheque books etc.
It is not the fact that we are not spending wisely - we just got hit with lots of bills and charges when we first moved house. OK, this was a mistake on our part then, but this has meant that, along with being trapped in a cycle of charges for the past 2.5 years, we just have never been able to recover. We just want the money we feel we have been unfairly charged, back. Just wondering how I should now respond. Should I say as much in a letter back to them, or should I fill out the lengthy template and have them patronise me and my OH about how to spend money wisely?0
