Sorry - I feel really bad that I have upset people about Xander! I used to like it circa early 'Buffy' but it's 'grown off' me over time! Eeeeep!

hi Orkney, yes I have had a look through the other greek names in fact it was one of the first things I done when I found out I was pregnant, but apart from had it been a girl I like Alexia and liked the shortened version lexi, there was no other boys names that I loved :)
    Oh ok :).
Sorry I was so negative at the start but knowing the baby's Greek roots I like Xander, goes well with Yannis, and is not completely unusual (as some Greek names might be I imagine!).

I asked about my sons name (not current baby on the way) on another forum, not because i would actually base my opinion on what a random cyber space stranger thought, but whether there was anything I hadnt myself taken into consideration that could affect him.

As it was the name was Mason and on finding out I lived in scotland and was scottish, it started a whole religious debate, being totally unreligious, I had no idea it was a 'jesuit' name....still...didnt stop me calling him Mason anyways...stone masonary runs in the family, Mason = Man whom works with stone.

Point being asking for opinions can sometimes be a good thing :)
I think of the Masonic lodge when I hear Mason, sorry, shame too as it is a nice strong name!
My child has a plain name, although we did not realise how popular it was when we chose it...we chose it for the Biblical meaning and that we both liked it!

The name for my baby on the way, Saul is biblical. Shame it was for the apostle paul when he will still persecuting christians. Will go quite well with mason in that aspect when you think about it :rotfl: Could be worse, we could have gone with Damien, my first choice :D I seem to like biblical names without such good backgrounds...like Cain.

I don't know too much about foreign names as my DC have simple English ones, but during my time in Crete men called Yannis and Nicos seemed to have them shortened to Yanni (or Yani) and Nico..I like the first, and the second is much nicer than Nic. No help I know, just my two pen'orth :)

So does my mum, can you imagine !
  • On the subject of middle names it is quite common to be known by your middle name - my DD is, but Dr's and schools can't cope!!! I know ridiculous, but they all either call her by her first name or I have to put the names in the wrong order. I even had to write a letter to her secondary school as her Primary had put them in the wrong order as they couldn't cope!!

    I can't resist I'm Spartacus!!

:rotfl:That's probably a fun name when you're 5; but not when you're in your 30s...

  • Panicos? Can be shortened into Nico.

    Zephyros?

Most other Greek names I know, I associate with fully grown men, and seeing as practically every one is a variation on Peter, James, Andrew, Anthony or Stephen, they're all just variations on a theme!

Have you asked your Dad for ideas - or are all his mates called Panayiotis, Georgios and Dmitri? :D

    :D

I hated my name as a child, also a Biblical name!, I think Saul is a lovely name, actually nicer than Paul tbh!
Biblical meanings only matter if you are of a faith where the Bible matters (I am but appreciate others are not!).
I also think we associate names with a person we might have known as a child with that name, or a friend etc.
