My daughter is called Imogen and my son Joseph. Although I do call Joseph Joe or Joe-Joe for short it really annoys me when someone we don't really know calls him Joe...I'd rather they called him Joseph as the short names are our names for him! lol0 -
It's pretty standard for chinese children to be given both a chinese name and an english name. Foot in it there a bit eh underlay? OP is Greek and plenty of examples of non-traditional names in other cultures.
I'm afraid I hate Xander and it's because I can't abide people naming their child already shortened names. Does that make sense? So for example if you would like to call your child Xander, fine but he should be christened or certificated or blessed under a tree as Alexander. Same goes for Esme and Esmerelda etc etc. I think it gives the child a choice in later life. What if they hate it? I mean who wants to be Moon Unit?
I love Nico but I thought it was a girls name? As in Nico from the velvet underground?
I like Demetrius?House saving Targets:

Ive only just noticed that on page #2, sorry, so was wrong to aim the argument at you OP.
I hope other people get my point though. Sorry if others don't agree. I personally would not feel comfortable with giving my child a name that has indicates a complete mis-association with his/her roots, connections, faith or nationality.
No problem Underlay, thanks for the post !! :beer:0 -

I know what you mean about shortening names. I chose Saul for that reason....but....it can be lengthened to Saullie for a nickname! Keep than in mind if you go for a one syllable name...most can have ie or y added onto the end to make it a nickname. The only name I know of that has no nickname is my daughter, Summer. Noone gives her any nickname, as its just not a name you can make a nickname from really. Shame its a girls name. I like seth out of your list earlier

OP I love both names, prefer Nicos though. Please feel free to choose your own childrens names without worrying how other people will judge them.
Why do some people feel the need to judge other people's choices? So what if someone chooses a foreign name? Or one spelled differently ? My name is a traditional plain English name with 4 letters yet people have still always asked me the spelling or assumed it was spelled differently. It's just one of those things.0 -

Purely out of interest, why can't you 'abide' other people naming their own children shortened names? I honestly can't understand why anyone else would even have an opinion on what other people choose to name their own children. Just choose your own children's names and forget about other people.spugzbunny wrote: »

To be fair you did not mention you were Greek at the start (or did I miss it ?).Kentmumof1 wrote: »I think if you had read through the posts you would find I AM GREEK which is why my sons names are Greek, really some people just don't get all the facts together before commenting !!!
I originally said I did not like your choices, however had I known the Greek family connection I would have thought them good names for that reason!
Have you looked online and searched under traditional Greek names ?Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.
