No heartbeat I'm afraid but they don't expect one in a foetus that's so small. My wife is a sister and is confident with her dates.

Her Hcg levels were low to start with, I don't know if that has any bearing on things?

    A h/b would be visible at 6mm :( We saw a h/b at 2.4mm with this pregnancy.

Low HGC levels can indicate a failed pregnancy, but it really depends on doubling rate rather than initial number.

Have the hospital given you any more information about what they are expecting to happen? They were quite honest with me about things. It's so awful being in limbo. 10 days seems a long time to wait if your wife is already bleeding. Have they done any blood tests?

My wife had a colleague do blood tests early on and the HGC levels were doubling every 48 hours. Both Sonographer and nurse in EPU were pretty useless in my opinion, Sonographer gave the impression that it was a miscarriage and nurse didn't explain anything at all, just said come to A&E if there is heavy bleeding / clots.

No blood tests done just given an appointment for another scan in 10 days time.

That's incredibly unhelpful and also very insensitive. I'm sorry you've not been given more information by anyone.
I guess your wife had the initial bloods done at the beginning of the pregnancy more than a month ago so things really should be progressing by now? I can't understand why they haven't done more bloods today just to see where things stand.

I know there is nothing they can do in this situation but it does seem like particularly minimal care in my opinion. From what you've said, it does sound very much like a m/c but I hope that whatever happens you get better care next time you visit EPU.

It can be such an uncertain time. I'm sorry :(

Lily I didn't have bloods done- was told baby had stopped growing and to go back in a week to confirm the miscarriage. once it was confirmed more was discussed about the treatment options. to be honest i can't remember much of what was said as i was crying my eyes out
I think they try not to be too definitive the first time they scan someone with a mmc as it could be a mistake with dates etc so that might be why the nurse didn't say much then again it could just be shoddy care :( x

dunclane - I hope it's much better news at your next scan, it must be such a worrying time for you both.

10 days seems like a very long time to wait if there should be a heartbeat at that size. I mean what do they think is going to change?

I think mine was 18mm and I was 100% sure of my dates plus we hadn't had sex since the conception so there was no chance of a heart beat appearing later on.

But then is 6mm nearer the cut off of when a heart best starts I don't know? But then if you had it at 2mm lily perhaps not.

Why can't they scan her in say 4-5 days time? Unless they assume by 10 days the mc and bleeding would have happened by then?

    So sorry dunclane

Tea lover, you're time will come, I am sure you'll find out you're expecting when you're least expecting it. I wish you the best of luck x. I know what you mean about blood, it seems like I just stopped bleeding and then started bleeding last night, oh god I can't handle this just now but nothing today, strange. I still feel down in fact I think almost back to square one again. My OH has commented on it to, as well. Maybe because other things have happened aswell, I don't know not good just now anyway.

Dunclane, best of luck to you both.

Its been just over 2 months since my m/c and I still have bad days. Everyone else seems to have forgotten about it and expect me to as well but its not that easy. The last 2 months when af has arrived it has just set me right back, unreasonable thoughts that me and oh will never have a baby etc etc. damn hormones!
  • Hi all

After going for a scan yday we found no heartbeat. Baby measured 6+5 when it should be 7+5 so have to go back in a week for a repeat scan but holding out no hope. My dates are 100%.

Dunclane, yday the nurse said the cut off for no HB in my hospital is 7mm. Mine measured 7.8mm so she said a HB would def be expected by then but it was too close for them to consider me for 'treatment'.

Scared of anaesthetic and risks of D&C. Have any of you ladies went down the medical management route?

Just feel so sad today and like no one understands. This is my 3rd now in a row and i have PCOS so ovulate so irregularly. I feel like this will never happen for me.

    Thanks for reading.
