Bit of a stupid question,we are going to NY in early March and presume it is going to be cold.We plan on wearing casual type clothes ie jeans and jumpers etc.will we be allowed in diners, restaurants and the likes of TOTR and the ESB etc casually dressed?

Some restaurants may say "fully booked" if they don't like the way you're dressed.

They are not expecting shirt and tie are they? are just smart / casual ie shirt and jumper.

On our very first trip to DC back in 1996 I took a sports jacket, shirt, tie and slacks to go out for a meal. Since then I've never bothered as unless to go to a really posh nosh place nobody has ever refused us entry.

Check out some of the roof top bars like "The Skylark" and "Top of the Strand" for views of ESB in the evening for the cost of a cocktail or beer.

I'm sure you'd be fine with smart casual (jeans, shirt, jumper) If not you'd better get your backside down to C21 ..... Ha Ha Ha !

PS One place you'll not get refused is O'Lunneys Times Square Bar especially if you tell them I sent you ! It's our local when in town always end up there for a nightcap or two !
  • We're off to NY in May and I have some questions re seeing the sights. I was looking at buying the NYC 3 day pass but it had some really bad reviews on still having to queue and the bus tour being sporadic.

I'm now looking at the city pass but it doesn't actually save much for the things we want to do... For example there's the Empire State and top of the rock but is it worth doing both?

Also, for the bus tour, would you book in the UK or arrange tickets over there? I'm looking for a couple of days hop on and off tour.

And finally, if you did pay for a pass before you went, which one did you use and was it worth it?

Thanks for the reply David, not sure what the weather will be like as never been to NY before but if similar to UK March will not be red hot:rotfl:,will take basic smart/casual and play it by ear. Will give the bar a visit ,hope we do not get chucked out if we mention your name:rotfl:,

We looked at the various passes but couldn't make them work for us, we just booked what we fancied, Statue of Liberty, WTC memorial, the museum wasn't open when we went and we chose the Empire State over ToTR purely because we felt the ESB was more of an iconic building, the new trade centre also wasn't finished when we went so that took that out of our hands.

If you want to go up inside the Crown of the SoL book now from HERE, there is plenty of availability for May but it's sold out through till the end of April so book it soon. It only costs $3 more to go up the crown and you get fast track entry into the pedestal/museum area.

oddly even after 7 trips to NY i have never been up ESB however ive been up TOTR 5 times, the last time was to witness a friend get married up there.

Anyway for me if i want a view over manhattan i want it to include the ESB, which of course you cant see if you are standing on it, you also cant see much of central park from the top of esb.

I always try and time my visit for an hour before sundown as i love watching manhattan light up, however this is also porbably the busiest time to go too as everyone else seems to have the same idea
Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right
