It's legal if you have their spare room and they are also there, isn't it? Though that has it's own dangers.0

Ooooooo I could only dream of a heavy night - I'll have my 15 year old tow so I'm not even sure I can go in a bar.....
Our hotel is Hotel Metro.
The Metro bar is quite nice and they also have an outside rooftop bar during the better weather which has great views of the Empire State Building. There is an Irish bar on the same street up towards 5th Ave which was ok during the day (when food was served) but not so welcoming later on at night when they seemed reluctant to even serve someone who wasn't a regular. A couple came in a few minutes after us and the barman basically shouted at them to get out as they were closed. We quickly drank up and got out and still got verbal abuse for only leaving a 15% tip!
We were also suprised at how early the bars closed in that area (around 11pm I recall) which seemed strange for the city that never sleeps. We ended up buying a bottle of wine during the daytime which we then took up to the hotel roof terrace at night. It did say you couldn't consume drinks not purchased in the hotel up there, but as the bar was closed we ignored it.
I've just had a look at the MTA planner site mentioned elsewhere which looks very good and, as mentioned, has the Metro as a specific location which is where we are staying in May.0 -

Anyway, areas that have people living and socializing will have bars that open much later, so 2am or 4am closings are much more normal in areas around Chelsea, Meatpacking District, below 14th Street in Manhattan so, Tribeca, East Village, Greenwich Village, or Lower East Side, Park Slope or Williamsburg in Brooklyn are all great areas to drink into the early hours.
Unsurprisingly, places that are corporate rather than social in London bars are empty and close early, and some are not even open at the weekend. Why open for a few tourists that might be staying nearby, when you could easily hop on the subway 5 minutes, and drink til late.

So excited for my trip. My family (that I'm staying with) are moving next month and have just got an apartment in midtown east, a couple of blocks from grand central. Seems like the perfect base for me and my shopping needs0
