Hi all
Some friends and I are planning to go to NYC for New Years 2014, probably for about 6 nights (say, 28th December to 2nd January).
I was looking at renting an apartment but have been reading about the law which means most holiday apartment lets are illegal.
Can anyone recommend a good (and legal) aparthotel? We're not sure yet how many of us there will be, but probably 7 or 8. We'll be 27 and 28 by then and will be doing a lot of sightseeing, so something close to subways would be best, ideally in Manhattan. We're all single but sharing double beds shouldn't present a problem - we did that on our California roadtrip last year.
We're also on a bit of a budget! If there are some which don't offer cleaning, for example, and are a bit cheaper because of it, that would be fine for that length of time!
Any help gratefully appreciated!

The other alternative, are hotels. There are a number of Apartment Style hotels designed exactly for people like yourself. Over on TripAdvisor, the Marmara always gets recommended, as does the Affinia Chain of hotels, including the cheaper option of Eastgate Tower, and of course the Beacon. These is the easiest option for your needs, as you know they're legal, and you don't have to work things out, and hope you're going to get in etc.
I'll have a look at these tonight but would still appreciate any thoughts!0 -
Has anyone flown on US Airways from Birmingham to Newark? Never been on a US plane before & wondering what the service etc is like on that route.
Planning on travelling 16th-20th July. Prices seem high across the board. In need of a new signature! :rotfl:0 -

I'm liking the look of Aer Lingus from BHX too. Not a direct flight, but pre-clearing US immigration might save some time at the other end.In need of a new signature! :rotfl:0 -
I used to fly US Airways from MAN - PHL which was a decent flight, and a reasonably nice aircraft. Seat Back Entertainment too, and decent staff too.
It's been a while since I flew them, but can't see much having changed.
with Aer Lingus, you only pre-clear immigration in Dublin, on the early flights so don't get that 1pm departure!

Thanks for the feedback M4ARKM. Now my only query is to cost - do I book now or hold out for better prices closer to the time...?In need of a new signature! :rotfl:0 -
Finally got around to booking hotel and flights for our trip. Flying with Virgin and upgraded for the flight back as its overnight and wanted to get some sleep as have plans the day we arrive back. Staying at the New Yorker, got a decent deal so pretty happy with that. Now get to do the exciting bit of planning the itinerary!
Having dived into a guide book, we've continued to draw up a list of things we want to do. Standard touristy stuff to be honest:
- TotR or ESB (possibly both, but if we do both I'd want to do one at night)
- Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island
- Central Park
- Broadway show (most likely Jersey Boys by the looks of it, unless anyone has any other recommendations?)
- Knicks vs Bulls (I will get round to booking tickets eventually, honest!)
- Natural History Museum
- Wall St. (Been tasked with getting a photo of me and the street sign for work!)
- Grand Central Station
- Times Square
Obviously some stuff will take a lot longer than others. Now just trying to juggle that lot into a coherent plan of attack...
On another note, any must-go to places for food that anyone can suggest? Haven't started to look at that side of things yet, its next on the hitlist.

Question about the HoHo bus tours.
Lot's of people say that you really must do one on your first day to get your bearings. However, they apparently take half a day to do and I'm not sure if I want to spend that much time doing it.
Is it worth it?0 -
I've never done a HOHO tour. I've survived plenty of trips over there without the need to do one.
I personally think they're overpriced for what they are, and slow... very very slow.

HoHo are a waste of cash . but you can get your bearings that way , Once you find a 3point reference around NYC . Chrysler-ESB- & another closer to you hotel .Suprising how small Manhattan is . A photo with the wall street bull is much better than any of the many street signs:cool: hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

Hi Mamara is great but the upper east side location is too far out for me. However they will be opening another on Park Avenue this year so watch out for that.
I also like Affinia Dumont very nice, and in a great location0
