I used CityMaps2Go in New York and it saved me a few times from getting lost. Doesn't use data but works with your phone's GPS so you can work out exactly where you are and can tell if you're walking in completely the wrong direction! It was free when I downloaded it a while ago although I seem to remember that being a special offer...?

I'm pretty, erm, directionally challenged :o but found navigating my way around pretty easy where the grid system is in place around midtown and up - you can only really walk a block before realising you've gone wrong! Downtown though where the streets are a bit more haphazard it was certainly useful to have something to help out. Personally I'd rather have a look on my phone for directions as its a bit more discreet than pulling out a paper map, but each to their own.

Thank you! I've downloaded this. Will be interesting to see how well it works with gps! I too am awful at directions...

Does google maps app not work offline as well? I'm sure I've used that before, you just hover around new york map in WIFI before you leave, then the GPS blue dot shows you where you are in NYC.

I hope this works as I've just spent the last few weeks saving locations on the app!

The Gansevoort Park Avenue or Meatpacking district roof top bars should be open as they have a pool open all year round.

Edit - 230 Fifth is also open all year round its heated and they also provide warm coats

I was in NYC this August (having previously been in April and in March) and I fond the weather very nice indeed.

We've been to the US Open 3 times, which starts on Aug Bank Hol weekend, so end of Aug and the weather was great all 3 times - probably helped that we spent a lot of it sitting in the sun watching the tennis though, rather than sightseeing / shopping. We did that first thing then headed out to Flushing Meadow.

It should be hot, but didn't notice a problem with the humidity tbh.

I quite like looking at accuweather

Don't be disheartened by the rain. Get a poncho and you will be fine :)

I have read that somewhere before so you could be right. Just using it for general directions over here though, it doesn't seem to "remember" what I've just been looking at if I turn my phone off or close the app for a minute to look at something else. Could be I've just never figured out how to use it properly though!

Google maps for iOS does have an offline mode.

Zoom in to the area you want, type OK maps into the search box and it will offline cache the area you're looking at.

That worked perfectly Mark, It took two 'OK MAPS' to save the whole of Manhatten and another one to save Brooklyn.

I put my iphone into 'airplane mode' to check google maps offline and I'm now covered for everywhere we want to go. I can continue saving attractions/restaurants etc on google maps on my desktop which immediately saves on iphone app.

Apps I'll be using when in NYC will be:

    Google Maps
    Embark NYC (for subways)
Trip advisor NYC offline (new app)

    That's a great tip cheers!

    More advise please guys.

Going to New York end of Nov, leaving Heathrow Terminal 3 via American Airlines, coming back using BA and arriving at terminal 5.

I would like to stay in a hotel the night before I travel near the airport and use the parking facilities for the duration I am away.

Any advice, using the MSE parking price checker I can get some good deals but it's getting back to terminal 3 after I arrive back at terminal 5 (a taxi is estimated at @£25-£30.).

Any ideas, I hope I'm making sense
