Struggling a bit to find anything affordable regarding a hotel in the meatpacking district, New York around Christmas. Tried Top10.com, Trivago as well as others, but nothing suitable remotely in my budget - ideally $50-$100 (max) a night. Any ideas?

Unforunately, your budget is unrealistic. Get rid of the budget, and you will see how expensive things are (around $300 a night minimum in the MePa District).

Try Long Island City in Queens, and you may find something under $150 if you're lucky.

You will never get something around $100 in MePa regardless of the time of year.

Can anyone suggest an app to download that will work offline if we need a map?

a map map or a subway map?

get a paper map. Paper is the thing before apps existing. As for a subway map, that comes in paper, but Embark NYC is a great app that will work offline too..

I am 'trying' to find a short break to New York next year flying from newcastle. I'm looking for July (attempting to avoid the school holidays), but am getting flights for around £1000k each. Would this be normal price for that time of year, have I missed the cheaper flights (or indeed were they ever cheaper than this....)

I wanted to go when New York was warm, rather than November time when I believe I can get flights from Newcastle with Jet2 - prices not out yet online.

2k is too much to spend on flights for a 3 night break, but gutted I can't find anything :-(
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

NY's not warm in July, it's steaming hot and humid.

I was thinking it would be like Egypt/turkey? I love the heat, and have been to America in August before, I thought it would be similar?

I used CityMaps2Go in New York and it saved me a few times from getting lost. Doesn't use data but works with your phone's GPS so you can work out exactly where you are and can tell if you're walking in completely the wrong direction! It was free when I downloaded it a while ago although I seem to remember that being a special offer...?

I'm pretty, erm, directionally challenged :o but found navigating my way around pretty easy where the grid system is in place around midtown and up - you can only really walk a block before realising you've gone wrong! Downtown though where the streets are a bit more haphazard it was certainly useful to have something to help out. Personally I'd rather have a look on my phone for directions as its a bit more discreet than pulling out a paper map, but each to their own.

I was in NYC this August (having previously been in April and in March) and I fond the weather very nice indeed. We've been to Florida in August many times and it was nothing like that. When you say you've been to America in August before, which part of America did you visit?

We are waiting to book flights for next July. You have to check, check, check every day and be ready to book as soon as a good price comes up. Be flexible with dates, potentially departure airports too,

Certainly we will not be paying £1k. My target is £550 (indirect To FL) and if I can't get it for that, it will be the first year for a long time that it's not possible.

I think it depends what you're comparing it to. In my experience its humidity rather than heat that's really exhausting and unpleasant. I've never been to either but would imagine Turkey and Egypt would both be more 'dry' heat? Where in the US have you been in August? Florida or elsewhere in the south is really humid so you'll probably have some idea of what to expect (although I would say Florida is a fair bit worse); around Las Vegas, California, Arizona etc on the other hand it can be baking hot but it's a desert climate so generally very low humidity which is quite different.

I was in NYC in early August and honestly it wasn't as bad as I was expecting; I'd probably go again in the summer if that was the only time I could manage a trip. I think you just need to be prepared for it and be sensible with taking regular breaks, keeping hydrated and so on. For me the subway was the killer - trains are air conditioned but the platforms are not and at times it was intolerably hot and sticky down there!

    Thanks Both,

KarenG I'm going to be monitoring the flights for Nov next year from now on every couple of days, we are pretty much open and flexible, I just didn't want to go when it was cold, but if it's half the cost then that's what we'll have to do.

I will still keep an eye out for July though.

As for heat, I don't mind anything, yes I think Egypt/Turkey was more 'dry' heat. I remember in America the aircon was controlled separately and HAD to be on due to the humidity, I'd come out of the shower and the room would be freezing, so we stood on the balcony but it was too humid we couldn't dry :rotfl:

I can't compare to Egypt/Turkey, I just found it quite ghastly except when we were somewhere with aircon.

It is the humidity which is the killer.
